Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 15/49
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15am, drank two cups of coffee, and ate some cereal. I should have eaten more for breakfast. Put everything in the car and got to the res. at 5:40. It was nice having a seasoned veteran like Ovetta at the house to show me what was what. I was kinda nervous for my first tri.
Event warmup:

Ran a mile or so with Ovetta and my wife to loosen up a bit. Then I got into the wetsuit and swam a little. Man it was cold outside.
Swim
  • 08m 57s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went pretty well but I slacked off on training to focus on the run and the bike. I kept running into people who were breast stroking and had a lot of trouble getting around them.
What would you do differently?:

Train equally in all three events and run over people if I have to. Seriously, I should have taken a wider line to avoid the slow folks.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

Went pretty well but one foot got stuck in the wetsuit and I fought with my socks for too long.
What would you do differently?:

Train with out socks and use pam on my feet/ ankles.
Bike
  • 40m 35s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.74 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed several people which was great. I was even able to give Ryan(himself) crap when I passed him. He ended up passing me again, but the glory was there anyway. I had really been working the hills over the last month or so and I really felt like it paid off.
What would you do differently?:

Upgrade my front derailer and ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Legs were really wobbly after the ride and hat to sit down to put my shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks.......
Run
  • 28m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

THE RUN FELT LIKE CRAP. As soon as I got out of the transition, both calves cramped up. I had to walk a little to losen them up, which sucked. I finally got into a rythem, but it still hurt way too much. I think I should have left a little on the bike to allow for my worst leg of the race. Although it felt really bad, I PR'ed my 5K run.
What would you do differently?:

I need more base training and MORE BRICKS....
Post race
Warm down:

Sat down and eventually had a beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to do a few more bricks and train more. All in all, not too bad for a total couch potato only three months ago. I'm really happy with the fact that I left nothing on the coarse. I was spent!

Event comments:

Perfect first race. I thought I would be intimidated by the really competative people, but I passed a few and it was great!

You did great out there, especially for it being your first race! I think your goals were MOP overall and AG, right? Looks like you nailed MOP for overall and were top 1/3 in your AG - awesome! Oh, and if it makes you feel any better, I was in a LOT of pain when I passed you back. And you were lookin good on the run when I saw you. So did Jen. Hell, she looked like she was ready to go another 5k!

Nice work! The run did suck...but the fact that you PRed..that's great. You overcame the difficulty!

2 BTers, back to back in the M30-34 grouping...I think I was 14th.

Way to go Matt. You were so cute worried about your first race. I couldn't help but smile! And you PR'd! Wonderful. All that other stuff will come with training. So don't worry too much. O. You rock!

Great first race!  I think that was a tough course for a first race, but it sounds like you paced it pretty well and went hard throughout.  Congratulations on the run PR, nice swim, and great overall place in AG for your first race.  Great racing and training with you too, we'll have to do some more this fall.

Thanks again for the meal ticket for Yvonne.  Will we see you guys in Ft. Collins on the 11th?

Looks like a great race! You set a PR and left everything you had out on the course, so you can't ask for anything more than that.  Just like Ryan mentioned, you're already MOP overall and FOP in your age group.  That's a hell of a finish for your first tri.  Congrats bro!!
