Veteran 444 | Subject: I'm slow There, I said it. I mean, painfully slow. When i read race reports where people say they "slowed to a shuffle" I look at their average pace and I'm even slower than that. I have come to realize that 99% of BT athletes are faster than me in 2 of the 3 disciplines, 98% are faster in all 3. Why am I posting this? I don't know, just rambling I guess. I know how to get faster, but feel like building up base mileage and endurance is more important at this point than upping my pace. I've only been at this since January, which doesn't say much for me because I read other people's race reports who have trained less, and guess what, I'm still slower than they are. So... slow triathletes of BT unite! All... what... like 3 or 4 of us. |

I looked at your logs a while ago back when you posted about the race you hosted. Your times already look a lot better than they did. Keep up the good work! Patience is the name of the game. |

Extreme Veteran 454 Torrance/Carson | Subject: RE: I'm slow You'll make huge gains in speed by focusing on your base mileage and endurance, so I wouldn't worry. No need to compare yourself to anyone else since we all have different genetics and athletic backgrounds. You'll see progress. Just keep at it! |

Veteran 444 | Subject: RE: I'm slow Oh man, some great lines in these responses. I love it. Thanks for the encouragement. Sinking forward... Awesome. I like to think I swim just fast enough to not sink... But just barely because when I swim only the very top of my head is out of the water. I have to push myself up to breath. I'm more of a submarine than a performance race boat. Good part is that I go under the wind chop. Now if I could just sprout gills... I do sometimes compare myself to others here, but ultimately I know that I have to progress at my pace, and race my race. If I tried to hang with my friend who runs an 8:00 mile I know I'd end up hurt or frustrated, so I just plod along like the stubborn mule that I am. I really just want to be fast so I can get away with wearing a stupid costume. |

Expert 2189 Dodge County, MN (out in the corn) | Subject: RE: I'm slow Yep, I'm slow, esp the run. My swim is OK, the bike is coming along, but the run is just sad. Yesterday I averaged 13 min miles. But I kept going and finished the race. That's all that matters. I figure if I hold onto this pace, by the time I'm 70, I'll be kicking azz. |

Extreme Veteran 845 Springfield, OH | Subject: RE: I'm slow Looking at your recent race reports, I'd say you're pretty much MOP. Like the rest of us. FOP = elite, BOP = last place. Everyone else = MOP. Welcome to the club. On the advice side of things, what do you think is your limiter? Is it physical ability or mental toughness? I'd be willing to bet it's a little bit of both. With your current fitness level, you CAN go faster than you are. It's just a matter of MAKING yourself do it. And that's not an easy task. It takes time to figure out how to do that, how to push yourself so hard that you don't think you'll finish if you keep up the pace, but you keep it up anyway. Judging from your last race report, you agree: "My own lack of confidence in my body's abilities. I don't push myself as hard as I know I could because I don't want to run out of energy. It's time to stop making excuses and just push myself to find those limits." Enter a local 5K. Run like hell the entire time. Run so hard it hurts to breathe and your legs are screaming for you to stop, but just keep on moving. Then do a cycling time trial event. Same idea. Push as hard as you possible can. Push so hard you might have to get off and walk to the finish line if you're not careful. For swimming, get a friend and do some 200s or 500s for time in the pool. Same theory. You can do these in practice too, but the race environment can help you push yourself to your limits. I learned a lot about how wrong I was about what my limits were by doing standalone running races and cycling time trials. Edited by apicek 2011-07-18 10:11 PM |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: I'm slow I think many of us can relate. I'm just happy to move in the right direction most of the time and much like many of us, I am out there, off the couch and trying to get better. I figured out pretty quickly that this was a competition with only one person, myself. Which is good, because this weekend I was passed by every possible demographic. Ladies, yep. Men, yes. A 12 year old boy passed me, no problem. A 14 year old girl, again no problem. A 68 year old man who at least was kind enough to run and talk to me a bit before passing. I kept looking behind me for a 70+ with a walker. And when I finished, I was very happy. Because I proved to myself that I could do it. Now I want to get better at it, but that will come with time. And I'll enjoy this journey, since that is really what it is. |

Veteran 444 | Subject: RE: I'm slow You guys are all awesome! I'm not complaining about being slow... just declaring it and embracing my slowness. Haha. While I do find it frustrating at times, I enjoy the sport, I love that my body is getting more firm and muscular and I'm making friends in the process. As far as my limiter... it's absolutely mental, with about 1% body composition. I'm a pretty athletic person, I have always been involved in some sort of activity my whole life, tennis, water skiing, wakeboarding, and now tri. The main thing is I haven't yet managed to "embrace the suck" and really push my pace on anything. That is my plan for the winter though. I have been passed by every type of person also, kids, older people, people on mountain bikes, I have yet to be passed by a beach cruiser on the bike or someone walking while I jog, but I'm sure I will at some point. And I just laugh. I'm only competing against myself out there. In my latest tri I beat my previous PB by 7 minutes on a tougher bike course, but I had an actual tri bike as opposed to a wal-mart roadie. The extra miles in the saddle helped though. I love this place. Hehe. |

I want to get a full winter of training in because I really want to see what progress has been made through the whole first year. I agree completely on the mental aspect. Wow, what a huge role the mental side of things is. And most of the people passing me are quite inspiring. To look at someone's calf and see "68" as he went past me was completely awesome. And yeah, the people on this site are a pretty awesome and helpful group. |

New user 595 Connecticut Shore | Subject: RE: I'm slow I am in a slow funk too. I looked at my last year numbers in a Tri I did. I just don't think I getting any faster, even though my mileages are hugely increased in training. I have lost quite a bit of weight. My calves and thighs are visibly larger and more defined. I just don't feel fast. Maybe it's the heat and humidity sapping me. I half expected that at some point my legs would feel lighter when I run. They don't. I think I should feel springier, but I don't I had a laugh last night looking at my splits from last year. I rode the bike section of the race in my running shoes. My T2 split for stepping off a bike and starting to run as about 46 seconds that was like 300 place for the transition. I am even slow at getting off a bike. Ughh.
At least I enjoy the training!!!! |
