Pre-race routine:

This is an afterwork race. Lights went out at work so I got to leave early in plenty of time to enjoy the event. It was in the 80s when we started and very hot.
Event warmup:

Met Mark, Stacie, Mark's friend Wright and saw Brett and hung out at the Transition area. Did a 10-minute run warm up and then donned the wetsuit for the swim.
Swim
  • 37m
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

Hated this swim and it was by far the worse swim of the season. Mostly I just couldn't get into a rhythm. Then I started to cramp, I think the aftermath of my big bike weekend. Also I haven't been swimming much so much concentration on the bike and run. But rounding the second time I seemed to pull it together. Just long.
What would you do differently?:

Move my damn arm faster.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I had severe cramping while putting on my shoes and socks. Quads were killing me and it was painful. But finally got them on and out the transition gate.
Run
  • 40m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Loved it! Went out slow and got a side stitch so it hurt until the 2.5 K turnaround and then finally got my groove. Then when I got to the 5K turnaround I felt the fire. Just turned on the heat and actually ran. Picked up the feet and went. Wonderful. Loved it. No hard breathing but going faster. Legs didn't cramp. Just felt really, really good on the run. And when I finished I could actually hold a conversation and not be doubled over with pain.
What would you do differently?:

Go out harder earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

This was the best part. Standing on the sand hanging out with BTers Adam, Ryan, Stacie, Mark and his friend Wright, Ricci and others listening to bad 80s rock and drinking beer and just talking triathlon shop. The Rocky Mt. Tri Club graciously agreed to barbeque so I also had food. It was lovely. Just what this sport is all about.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim sucked. Can't believe I bombed on it.

Event comments:

Great race despite my horrible swim. Glad I did it. I feel really good going into my 1/2 next Sunday. I feel I'm getting faster and stronger on everything except for the swim. Which is ironic since I it was the swim that got me into doing triathlons in the first place. I need my swimming mojo. Where are you swimming mojo? Where are you? :0
