Subject: Dumb ? on Tire Rotation Direction
I seem to have placed my tires on in the wrong direction. The old ones had a rotation direction but I didn't see an arrow on the new ones when I put them on.

Yet... Maybe 2 months later and hundreds of miles on them now I see that I just missed the arrows.

Does it really matter? Should I flip them correctly? Will the fact I've been riding them the wrong way negate any benefit of having them flipped the proper way? Is it just going to cause premature wear or does it mess with rolling resistance?

It isn't a huge deal but you should turn them around.  Handling tends to be better when they are facing the right way.

I talked to a Michelin rep once and he told me that the only reason they (and other manufacturers) put rotational direction arrows on their tires is so that people would stop calling to ask which way the tires go. So just don't worry about it.

Without knowing the type of tire it is, I'd say switch just to be safe.  A little more practice changing tires won't hurt either.

Does it have rain gooves? If so, switch it. Otherwise, it's probable fine but if it bugs you, it'll take 5 min or so to put it in the right direction.

I had the same thing happen on one tire when I put them on in March and have been too lazy to change it back.  I haven't noticed any ill effects.  FWIW, I also have my trainer skewer in the rear wheel because I keep forgetting to change it.  It's almost trainer season again, so I may just leave it :-).

I'm guilty of them same I only change the skewer when it's time for a big race.

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess it doesn't hurt to flip them back might be a good excuse to change out the tubes before IMOO. But good to know it's not a big deal if I don't get to it.

I put latex tubes in for my first HIM.  I've been too lazy to change them back to butyl and have to pump my tires up a couple time a week.  Maybe I'll get around to it when trainer season hits :-).

Also considering Latex... plus one of them has been in the bike for probably 4+ years. Just a peace of mind kinda thing.

If you look for example at the Continental GP4000S, you need to get the direction correct not only for handling, but also for rolling resistance.

This.  After doing a fast-as-possible flat repair during a ride, I realized months later that I had the tire on going the 'wrong' direction.  One day when I was in my LBS, I asked the bike shop mechanic if it mattered, and he gave the same response.

If there's a 50% chance of me getting a tire on with the rotation in the right direction, there's a 100% chance I'll get it wrong.

Oh well, it's good practice - I'd take a few minutes to turn them around.

For your front tire, you can just swap your skewer to the other side of the hub and turn the wheel around in your fork.  No need to change the tire at all.

On the rear, you need to swap the tire if it is a tread design that matters (and it may not...what tire brand/model is it?)

I think the problem is they only put the rotation info on one side of the tire. I must have only looked at one side when I put them on.

I ended up flipping the front one, but didn't get to the back one before I got my pre-IM tune up, and now I don't want to mess with the true on the wheel before the A race, so hopefully it doesn't make a huge difference.
