Comments:

Similar to last week, chose to end my long run with a "race" in order to have company and pick up the pace a little. Not bad considering I ran nearly two hours before the start. I've only done one stand-alone 5K in my life, and honestly do not remember the time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, good training run, two weeks until Las Vegas Marathon.
Post race
Warm down:

Kept running to car to get camera to shoot the boy's finish. We co-erced the boys into doing this, Dakota was OK with the 5K, but Dante' was insistent (to the point of tears) on racing the 1-mile fun run. As a compromise, I suggested they both walk with their momma until the 2-mile point, then race each other to the finish, and I would get a trophy for the winner. They thought that was great, but they finished in a dead heat. Luckily I bought two trophies!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Using this as a training run. ;)

Event comments:

First year for this race, which benefits the LafayetteCommunity Health Care Clinic, providing health care for the non-insured working poor. Well-organized for a first-time event, with the unique "hill" feature. Good party after, as well.

Nice way to incorporate training and a real race...Are you ready for the LV Marathon.  Really curious to see what people think about the course.

Congratulations on getting the kids involved in and then through the race ... as someone who works a lot of kids, I see more and more becoming ensnarled in the sedentary lifestyle of watching TV or playing computer games.  Way to get them outside of the house and exercising.

And who said sibling rivalry was a bad thing?

Hey good race John and it sounded like a fun time with the kids too! Races as training runs or time spent with friends are really just as important as banging your head against the wall. Maybe more so. I'm hoping to run this next Thursday's race and help DK through her first 5-miler ever. Tthat will really make the day enjoyable!

Adding a 5k into your taper? Interesting way to approach a marathon ...... but it must have felt nice to break up the monotony of an LSD.

Why not? This whole training cycle has been unscientific and even happenstance, due to naggiing injuries and a couple little hurricanes.

This race was just for fun and the kids, but given the collapse at the end of your last marathon, you might want to try a little higher intensity work at the end of your long runs. In particular, read Pfitzinger & Douglas' Advanced Marathoning.

Great idea to get the kids involved.  I hope I'm so lucky when my little crumb-snatchers come along.  Great race!

For the kids is always good. Mine are still a little young for racing more than a little (5 and 2 and "one in the oven").

My collapse had nothing to do with level of intensity of my long days and everything to do with it being my first marathon and the fact I went out fast and was running 7:20's for the first 9 miles ....... Have to go out there and "learn" the distance to get better! My lesson was definitely learned. Next time I'll start slower and build, like I had been doing in my training runs. I just got this wild hair that I might be able to BQ that day so I went out like a rocket (and fizzled like one).

Gotta disagree, your 5K time reinforces my opinion that you're fully capable of running that 3:15 with proper training, maintaining those 7:20s. There was nothing wrong with your pacing, it was perfectly within your capabilities. As for first-timers, we just had a guy here go sub-3 in his first, after proper training.

First marathon, fizzled, yet you're on here espousing marathon advice like you're Hal Higdon himself. Let me rephrase my advice: quit trying to teach and start trying to learn. Start with Pfitzinger-Douglas, can't hurt you in your BQ goal.

Yeah I saw. His time rocks.

I trained for a 3:45 - 4:00 time until right near the end of the 18 weeks, so I don't necessarily fault my training. I fault my decision making on the line at the beginning of the race.

I'll look into it. Not sure how many more marathons I plan on doing (as a single event - plan on doing at least one Ironman), but every little bit of knowledge helps. Thanks for the criticism advice.

Edit: Ordered it from Amazon ....... $14 ..... hopefully worth it.

Impressive time for a 5K anyway, much less right after 11 miles!
