Subject: anyone else freaked out about the bird flu?
last night i went to yoga with one of my best friends. she had emailed me something about the bird flu about a week ago. i knew about the bird flu already, since its been around now for a while. i had read about the deaths and outbreaks in asia. well, my friend is completely freaking out about it and is convinced that now that it is in africa, it will mutate and we'll have a pandemic on our hands. something about the fact that africa is involved makes me think of africanized bees and the not so subtle racist implications that once it hits the 'dark continent' we're all 'doomed' (not that my friend is racist, it just reminded me of the bee thing). still, she got me a little freaked out. came home and went and read what i could on who's website, and i'm not as freaked out now. still, the dept. of health here in minnesota has recommended keeping a weeks worth of food and water 'just in case' ('just in case' anything major happens, not just the bird flu).

i'm on a strict media diet, because i really believe its a bunch of fear mongering. the carton below sums up how i feel about living in a state of constant panic in our fear drivin culture. anyway, i listen to npr and read the sunday paper, and that's about it. i feel like the bird flu thing is more of the same fear mongering, after all - 150 have been infected, half of whom died. that's 25 a year since it infected a human 3 years ago. not to pull out the 'you have a better chance of getting killed in a car crash' thing, but, well, i have to do it! in 2002, 42,850 people died in car crashes in the united states. that's 117 a day. sorry, but i think i'll keep off the freeways instead of freaking out about the bird flu.

The fears are not of the virus in its current version, so don't be fooled by such a low number of infections at this point.  The fear is the possibility, which may or may not come to be, of a mutation in the virus that allows it to be spread from human to human like the regular flu virus.  People can dismiss it if they'd like, and they may end up being correct in doing so, but that's basically the way every major flu pandemic has occurred throughout history.  And it's not like we have great anti-viral drugs these days anyway.  In fact, the ones we do have don't seem to work against avian flu, and we've yet to make an effective vaccine against it.

People talk about the flu like it's no big thing, but it kills thousands of people in the US yearly and many more worldwide.  A more virulent strain that we've never seen before and is resistent to our drugs is potentially a disaster.

Or it may never happen.  Can't hurt to be prepared.

Not freaked out yet, but definitely more careful. Especially we got Canadian geese all over the area and I visit people who travel to Asia quite often. And I heard that the symptoms from Avian flu (like SARS) is way more severe than your garden variety common flu. Just drink more vitamin C, work out, bundle up and eat more healthy food.

I sure hope people don't look at me differently based on where I am from and how I look (no, I don't look like a bird, but I am from an Asian country).

Remember, the Bird Flu is NOT a terminal disease.  Acquiring the Bird Flu doesn't mean you're going to die.   It may be a newer strain of flu that infects human more easily - as the human bodies are not used to this particular virus.

The larger number of people getting sick, the larger number of people MAY die from it, making the NUMBERS look big.  But as DerekL said, the regular human flu kills LOTS of people in America and the general public may not even aware of it.

It's the science behind the whole thing that makes scientists excited.  How the virus mutates, how people interact with animals due to the lack of boundaries (generations ago there are more space for animals to live in, now birds may build their nest on your roof), how diseases spread more readily due to human travelling and trading of animals/animal products etc.  THis provides lots of research opportunity, and with press helping to spread info more effectively, everything appears to be a big deal.

personally I'm not worried.  It's just like every other killer disease outbreak.  Remember SARS?  How about West Nile?  We see these huge outbreaks in asia and start freaking out... well factor in population density, sanitation standards, and regulation and you wonder how stuff lke this doesn't happen more often.  Even though West Nile is here in the states, the media only choses to talk about the people who get it and die.  Never mention that those people were suceptable to it in the first place and that a larger number of people get it and survive it.

Just look at Mad cow disease.  It's been ripping through Europe, but so far hasn't managed to come here.  People complain about the FDA all the time, and that we are too carefull, but when we reamain untouched by these new exotic diseases, I say that means something.

Without going into everything you said,  I'll just say that there's no comparison between any of the things you posted and the potential of this.

I'm not saying to live your life scared at all, but dismissing this as "just another SARS" is just wrong.

i'm not saying there is no reason to be concerned.  I'm saying the safeguards to prevent this from becoming a huge pandemic in the states is already in place.  Can it infect people here?  possibly.  Will it go out of control? Doubtfull.  Especially since it's now a known disease, so it's being watched for.

At this point, I'm not incredibly worried.  I don't see a reason to add additional stress into my life worrying about the bird flu that may or may not be a human epidemic.  I've got enough stress already.  We get really concerned about things that may never pan out.  There was a pig flu scare in the 1970s and nothing much happened with that.  I realize that there is the potential for avian flu to be bad, but at this point, I'm really not going to worry too much.  Just try to keep myself healthy, which I need to do anyway.

i do understand how serious influenza is - my great grandmother died of it and left my grandfather basically orphaned at age 3. its a good idea to keep an eye on it, and develop some strategies for surviving any major outbreak, it just think its unlikely that it will happen quickly or uncontrolably or that society will disintegrate when and if it does.

the media loves to create a panic, because it gets people to turn on the tube and watch. more often than not, we're told to worry about the meteor hurtling towards earth while we sit, paniced, sucking on our marlboros and eating our cheesey poofs and ignoring the things that really ARE killing us.

It may be considered a cliche of my username to bring this up, but what's the point of stressing about it anyway?  I am in no way being dismissive of its importance, but rather more people should consider their own importance in relationship to it.  Even if I believe that this is going to be the most disastrous thing to hit mankind since metrosexuals the plague, what exactly am I going to do about it?  This reminds me, in a distant way, of people who get worked up over a celebrity getting married or breaking up.  People act as if they have a vested interest for some reason.  (Sheryl Crow being back on the market does not fall into this category because, well, she's Sheryl Crow, jus sayin').

I don't want to sound like I'm advocating the "don't pay attention because it's not my problem" attitude.  I guess my point, if I have one, is that our reaction should be proportionate with our ability/responsibility to affect the situation.

Eh, in the 90s it was Ebola that was going to decimate the population.

If you want a real reason to be alarmed - AIDS has mutated into a killer virus. They call it killer AIDS because it skips the HIV stage and goes into full-blown AIDS, kills within ~ 6 months of infection. It is undetected because we are tested for the HIV antibodies; since it skips HIV people are getting the false sense that they are uninfected. They are HIV free, but not AIDS free.

Strangely, you hear very little about this in the news.

aaahhh No, but listen to Derek he is a doctor  If it mutates in Africa it will be devasting because most of the people there are in frail health anyway and they have little or no health care system.

Now THAT was funny!

What is me worrying about this going to do? If we have a pandemic will it save me? Maybe I will get sick maybe I wont... Either way I plan to have a great time until I check out. If thats tomorrow nothing I can do to stop it...Why worry. However, I  DO think the WHO and CDC SHOULD worry about this thats their job and we pay a lot of tax dollars for them to worry about it.

Birds with the H5N1 strain were found in Italy and Greece.

Wash your hands, don't put your fingers near your face, cover your mouth when you cough, keep your kids home from school when they're sick, stay home from work when you're sick.

Nothing irritates me more than a child old enough to know better opens their mouth and coughs all over the room spraying infectious droplets everywhere.

If you're really paranoid and don't mind the funny looks, wear a mask on airplanes. Tell people you're on chemotherapy or something.

Excellent, excellent point**
The AIDS epidemic is completely out of hand, and the only reason folks here aren't pulling their hair out over it is because it's happening predominantly in Africa at the epidemic level.
I try and take "hang loose's" approach to the bird flu as far as seeing what can/can't be done and trying to adjust panic/stress accordingly, but as American citizens there *are things to be done in the area of AIDS research/treatment/support - like getting on our government officials to get some serious aid out there, and go after the pharmaceutical companies that are overcharging and keeping the necessary meds out.
