Total Time = 1h 40m 54s
Overall Rank = 104/???
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 0/??
Pre-race routine:

Got to the race site about 7:10 for a 7:30 start. Got dressed, jogged over to the start line. Drank about half of my Vitamin Water to get something in my stomach.
Event warmup:

Just the slight jog to the start line, about a 1/2 mile or so total.
Run
  • 1h 40m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew it was going to be a crappy race based on how I've been feeling, but I still thought I might have a shot at breaking 1:40, but definitely not 1:35 as was my original goal. I found my boss at the start line and it was really nice as he ran with me for most of the race even though he could easily have taken off (he's a 3:00 marathoner).

Tried not to go out too fast on the first mile, but the second was definitely too much, so we backed it off. After three miles we were onto the trail itself (paved railroad trail, basically flat) and fell into a nice groove. Started to feel a little draggy as we got to the big downhill near 7. As we climbed the hill at the turnaround I knew there was not any gas in the tank and just put it in cruise control. A lot of people passed us up the hill. My boss saw his brother that was running the full going down as we went up and high-fived him.

Back on the trail again it was in damage control mode and as you can see from my splits, was creeping closer to 8:00's. At 9-1/2 I told my boss to go ahead and take off to see what he could make up in the last three miles. I was in "just finish" mode and the next few miles dragged on. At the end of 12 I was at 1:31:55 and knew that is would be hard to break 1:40 at my current pace. I tried to pick it up a little, but it wasn't enough to get under.

Oh well, finished at least without totally dying and embarassing myself. Chris ended up doing a 1:36 something and finishing about 30 people in front of me. Based on last year there was probably about 500 1/2 marathoners entered, so I should be in the top 20% or so. I'll find out when they post final results (they were only up to about 175 when I left printed on the wall and there were plenty of people left on the trail).
What would you do differently?:

Not be sick for the week leading up to the race maybe??? I'm sure it is bronchitis or pneumonia as it is taking this long to clear up.

And drink, because I only had a splash of Gatorade at mile 3, and that was it for the whole race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to the school where it was being hosted, had a banana and a bottle of water and went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sick, no training for a week.

Event comments:

Good race, bad performance. I would recommend it, but since it is so early in the year it is usually cold like today.

Performance: Below average
Mile 1 - 7:24, mile 2 - 6:51, mile 3 - 7:39, mile 4 - 7:26, mile 5 - 7:36, mile 6 - 7:38, mile 7 - 8:51, mile 8 - 6:11, mile 9 - 7:50, mile 10 - 7:58, mile 11 - 7:58, mile 12 - 8:28, mile 13 - 8:04, last .1 - 0:53.
Course: Fairly flat except for two 1/4 mile or so long hills at miles 2 and 7. The course marker for mile 7 was definitely marked wrong. Since it was just after the turnaround at the bottom of the hill I'm guessing it should have been facing the other was as that point on the downhill would have been about the right place based on my pace until then. I certainly didn't run a 6:11 going up the hill!!

Good effort Rick! I know you had higher goals for yourself, but you can only control so much. Sounds like you did a great job given your condition this week.

It's early in the season and still lots of time to build up that engine for the summer races! (and leave all these winter illnesses behind. )

Nice job on the race, especially after being sick. It's great to have someone to run with. Keep up the good work!

Still waiting for them to post final results to see how many people ran in the race. Sore today, and my left knee is twinging ITB issues (from the racing flats I'm guessing). Have to make sure I stretch well every day to avoid any problems.

Rick!!!

HOLY COW ... you're an animal!

Your flu induced 1/2 mary pace is just about on par with my 10k PB pace.  All of those cold morning strapping on your running shoes is paying dividends!

Awesome job, my friend.

Speed is relative, isn't it? Great job. I can't imagine running at a few degrees above freezing. Yikes.

Looks like I was 107/631 gun time, 104/631 chip time.

Based on what I could figure out - 10th in my AG (M30-34). Didn't feel like counting the whole way through so no idea how many total in my AG.

All in all not bad. Top 17% overall, probably same in my AG. Gosh I wish I was healthy and see what I really could have done!

Hey,

It looks like a good race anyway and your next race with be the PR. Keep working out those IT band issues, so it doesn't become an injury.

I look forward to reading your next 1/2 mary RR.

Because I'm a geek, I figured out the ordering for our age group.

You were 10th out of 38.

And I was (You Guessed It) 38th out of 38.  The true embodiment of DFL beats DNF.

Hey Rick,

Way to hang tough on the run.  Hopefully the flu bug will stay away and spring will come early.

Awesome job, in particular racing sick and all the stuff you've been dealing for the past days. (if not you could have ran 1:35 for sure) Now get better so you can continue training. Congrats!
