Pre-race routine:

Porta potty. This is a word you're going to have to get used to reading, because it's a big part of my experience today.
Event warmup:

Walking to and from the Porta potty.
Run
  • 2h 38m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good through mile 7 or 8 or so... kind of wanted to stop at mile 10... a nice round number... why bother myself with 3.1 MORE miles? I was running with my friend IP (Irish Peter) who is coming off an injury and didn't know if he could or would run today at all... but decided he'd hang with me... which I TOTALLY appreciated. It made the race bearable, and fun... He likes to talk. :) Fine by me... I liked to listen!

His Half Marathon PR is on that course...set last year... something like 1:40... so he did me a significant favor today... And I am ever grateful!
What would you do differently?:

There's not much I could have done differently. I'm so glad I had someone I knew and liked to run with. It was great to have a person there with me for the whole event. We laughed, we sang, we just had a hum dinger of a time... even when I wanted to just "stop" around mile 10... we kept on cruising... And then it was mile 11... then before I knew it, mile 12... Then we met back up with Katie and Pete and Carleen at the finish line!

This was a good run for me... Exactly how I thought I'd do... was aiming for 2 hours and 30 +/- minutes. And that's just where I landed. I don't think there's much I could have done differently except maybe train more. My longest run in training for this event was only 12 miles. I should have gone a bit over distance, I'm thinking. I would have had the full 13 according to my plan, but I got sick that one weekend.

Am thinking I will need to re-examine my pre-race diet. Something is not right. This was worse than just nerves.

Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, desperately search for Porta potty.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My dependence on Porta-potties.

Event comments:

A very well organized race... and the sweatshirts are really really cute. I will wear it with pride because I ABSOLUTELY earned mine.

Great race!  Glad you had a buddy to help through the tough miles!  Like you, running is not my favorite of the three disciplines - in fact, when I read your short term goals about running, I thought, "I have to write some of these!"  I read recently that in triathlon you don't have a worst sport - you have a first, second, and third best.  Hooray to you for getting out there with your third best !  And definitely, wear that sweatshirt with pride!

Doh!  Sorry to hear about your porta-potty problems.  I guess that explains why I never saw you guys.    I was worried I was waiting in the wrong place.

I stuck around after for a while, until about 2:35 (race clock) or so, and then headed back to my car as I hadn't seen you or K & P.  Dang.  I should have waited another 3 minutes.

That race *was* definitely tough.  They aren't kidding when they said there were hills.

Glad you had a good race despite the trips to the little blue room, and enjoy that *FAST* sweatshirt.

YOU DID IT! Totally awesome to keep on keeping on despite GI distress. Boy, for someone who doesn't like running, you sure did a heck of a lot of it!

Awesome Job!!!

You did great..finished it and worked through some tough times. You will be stronger for this and it will help you as you go longer tris.

Cool your friend Irish Peter was able to run with you.

I'm so proud of you and you did your first 1/2 on a hard hilly course...beautiful!

Now my question for you ....was this a run "Changer" for you?

LOL...I always love reading your race reports, they never fail to make me laugh.  Port potty issues, yup been there, have seen the ugly side of that too!!  Nice race Whizzz...ummm, come to think of it, maybe calling you "Whizzzzz" is really the basic cause of the porta-potty problem!

Great job Whizz!  After reading your RR, I'm glad I didn't truck the kids over there.  I could just see myself standing there introducing them to a porta potty!   Oh well, catch you at another event.
