Total Time = 46m 38s
Overall Rank = 59/997

Age Group Rank = 2/68
Pre-race routine:

Was pretty relaxed about this race so got up around 5am. Ate oatmeal with brown sugar before heading to the venue.
Event warmup:

20 minute warm-up with drills and strides. I know a ton of people as a result of working on this race for years so spent most of my time chatting it up with them.

Took 1/2 gel and H20 20' before the start.
Run
  • 46m 38s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 07m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

I had one goal going into this race, beat my '07 time of 47:16. I have been injured every single Fall since then so it was very important for me to stay healthy this year and equally important to show I could start crawling back to some of my better running times. I thank my coach Brett Petersen for both keeping me healthy and getting me back on track with my running.

I decided to go out hard from the start and hold on as long as I could. First mile was 7:00 which is so much faster than I am used to running, but I knew at that point I would achieve my goal. I had just banked :35 seconds. I kept going as hard as I could and while my pace eroded, I kept banking more seconds. It wasn't until I hit the 5th mile that I started giving some back.

There were strong winds mile 4-5 and a big hill on mile 6, but I kept plugging along; breathing was very hard, but HR was dropping a couple of beats (hmm?). In retrospect, I think I could have pushed even harder at that point, but I am not used to dealing with the pain of a 10K yet. All the years of marathon running and then IM isn't quite the same. I saw the pace clock at the 6m mark and thought I might break my 10K PR of 45:42 so I goosed up my effort and sped down the final .2m as fast as I could. I saw the clock from a distance and realized that wasn't happening today.

Crossed the line and knew immediately I could have gone harder. No throwing up.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed harder into the wind. Pushed harder up that last hill. I gave back 28 seconds on those 2m. If I had pushed 6 seconds harder I would have won my AG.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a bottle of water. Grabbed a 1/2 bagel. Headed to get my coat. It was windy and I was cold. Plus I had a bird to get in the oven.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ability to withstand the pain of a 10K long enough.

Event comments:

This race started in '04 and has gotten better every year. I've worked on it each year and seen how the dedication of the volunteers has let it blossom into nearly 7000 participants today. Great organization, great chairty, well worth doing.

WOW, you are so out of my league girl.   If I reach the puke zone there had better be a drink in my hand!   Congratulations on a great performance and the PR.
