I used to play roller derby. I had to quit because it took up too much time/money and I was in grad school at the time. Plus I had a knee injury. I began running as a replacement exercise. (PCL tear, impact injury, so it has little to do with running!)

Some of the local players still try to recruit me, and every time there are tryouts I think about it. Not this year because I'll be doing IM training....maybe someday though.

I used to be deep into freshwater aquariums.  Monster freshwater aquariums that is.  My tank was "little" and on a 180 gallon tank which is 6'x2'x2' and had inhabitants that are 15" or bigger.  I finally decided to get out of the hobby this year.  I only have 1 fish to sell and all the equipments.  It's about as expensive as triathlons if not more...  I have buddies who has 400, 750, and 900 gallon home tanks...  Then there are those people who build pools for their fish...

I have been a mechanic since I got out of high school, and for the past few years was a Nissan Technician.  I've always been in to modifying and racing cars.  Drag racing and autocross specifically (only ones I could afford).  Got into Triathlon in the last couple years and pretty much replaced cars in the last year with IM training.

Now I'm married and back in school full time, so my car budget is gone (along with all of my turbo's, horsepower, and cool cars).  I dont think I'll be racing for years to come, not until I'm out of school and can afford to do it again without being irresponsible with our finances.  I'm okay with it because I know that I couldnt afford to have a family on a technician's paycheck, one day I'll be able to have my fun and be responsible at the same time, instead of living to support my hobbies.

Luckily I'm left with a decent road bike, a wetsuit, and pretty much everything I need for triathlon.  So my hobby CAN be cheap, as long as I choose shorter, local races.

At the moment, triathlon is #1. Before triathlon I was into photography. I sold some of my nicer lenses to pay for my tri bike and powertaps. I still have a nice camera body and three lenses that travel with me, but it's definitely taken a back seat for the time being.

My big "obsession" used to be Mazda Miatas. Buying, fixing, selling, club fun runs, racetrack weekends, etc. I'm down to just 1 car now - a low mile 1991 mariner blue that stays in the garage until nice days- hoping to put more miles on the road bike this year. Except for the fact that I promised that I'd give that car to the kids one day, I've often thought about selling it to fund my next bike!

Fishing and hunting - fly fishing in particular is my passion.  However, s/b/r training severly cuts into any other hobbies.

Not sure it's "bigger" but I love anything outdoors--trekking, climbing, kayaking, bike touring. I once took a year off just to trek and bike tour. My chances to indulge in those hobbies now are limited by job and family obligations. At this point they are just occasional treats. Running (and biking when home during the summer) gets me outside for the sake of day-to-day sanity. Looking forward to an adventure trip to Laos next month--hopefully will get out on the river and/or go trekking then.

Sadly, I find between work, preparing for work (I'm a teacher), class (I recently went back to school to earn additional certification), and training, there is very little time left.  I used to be into sewing and crafts and would like to do more of that.  A couple of my tri friends knit.  We've talked about starting a knitting club over the winter.

hot rods/customs and auto restoration.  did it professionally for a while.  has fallen to the wayside a bunch since I started this new obsession.  I'll get back to it eventually--I always do.  Same with whitewater canoeing.

I'm a serious deer hunter from the first of October through the end of the year, and three of my kids hunt with me regularly. The rest of the year I can concentrate on running, biking and swimming. But during the fall my training really gets hurt by heading for the deer stand every opportunity.

Leather Carving, and it can easily take as much time as tri training. I have a pic of an 11x14 3D portrait in my photo albulm. Between carving and painting there is easily 50hrs in completing it. I occasionaly find someone that wants a custom carved saddle, and that will take me upwards of two months @ 60+hrs a week. Custom fully carved boots will take a couple of weeks just for the carving and painting, then another 4-5 days to assemble(all by hand, no machines). On the flip side, the elk photo in my albulm is a class template I use to teach others how to carve. I can have newbies doing the full carve in 8 hrs. This really doesn't include the sewing. I sew everything by hand. No machine can stitch as strong a stitch, as I can do by hand. However, the cost of said strength is time in production.

I had a hobby that was bigger than triathlon, then I turned it into a job.

Triathlon was a hobby. Now it's my career and a hobby.

My other avocation is music. I play bass guitar and double bass.

Not sure about 'bigger', but definitely on par with: ice hockey (I'm a goalie on a women's team) and Tae Kwon Do.  Plenty of other interests (kayaking, photography, generally being outside enjoying nature: hiking, etc., reading, music) as well, hard to sort them out.

It used to be golf, tennis, and taking my car to the track (Pacific Raceway).  Great fun flying around the road course there.

Now, if I'm not training, I'm building things with Legos or driving RC cars with my six year old.  I love my little guy and he is the world to me.

I have probably three things that take my time and $ along with Triathlon.  The first two, I would say are above Tri and the bottom one takes up lots of time/& as well!

I am an avid Outdoors-Woman!  Hunting and Fly-Fishing take up lots of time and $ for me.  More than anything, its time with family and being outdoors.  Also traveling and seeing new places.  Went to Africa in 2007 and have been to many other places all across N. America Hunting and fishing.

Also, Love off-roading. Have a Polaris RZR, and spend many days/year in the desert riding.  Have lots of friends/family that race (Motorcycles and Off-road racing series) so its always fun to go watch/pit for them

NASCAR... Yes it sounds red-neck and I am proud of it!  One of my best friends is a Driver in the Truck Series so every year I try to hit up a few races (usually Phoenix-4hrs away, California-2.5hrs away) and one away race (in the past: Nashville, Pocono and this Year Texas!)

Now that I look at it, no wonder I am broke

A couple things, photogrpahy is one, but I turned that into a part time job and shoot in night clubs on the weekends. Not hard work photography wise but for my limited shooting time it's all I got.

School takes up 90% of my time (Going for bachelor in Electrical Engineering)

Then the other 2 hobbys I like to do whenever I can is work on my BMW e30 (the late 80's, early 90's square 3 series BMW), and rock climbing.

If there are any e30 enthusiasts in this forum I have a 91' 320i that I imported from Japan.

Not anymore.  Once my son got involved with triathlon and we started training/racing together I was all in.  I've had many hobbies over the years, including a few years training retrievers.  All of my hobbies centered around the outdoors or fitness.  I don't expect that triathlon will be as big a part of my life once my son is grown and gone, but you never know.  This is my second time around with triathlon, the first being in the 80's.  I enjoy it more now and can afford more toys.

Don't know if it qualifies as a hobby, but it takes up my non-s/b/r time: I'm a golf tournament official for the NCGA.  USGA certified.  Mostly for local events, but this June, I'll be working the US Open at the Olympic Club!  Whoop!!!
