Subject: Long run the day before long ride?

I am wondering what people think of the idea of doing the long run the day before the long ride?  I am pretty sure most plans call for the other way around.  If I do my long runs the day after, I have to run alone.  If I do them the day before, I will have a running partner.

Any thoughts?

You'll probably find it to be 50/50 on here.  There have been several debates on the subject and it seems to be pretty evenly split.  Good thing about doing the bike 2nd day (IMO) is that you get the long run over with and it is easier to do the bike on tired legs rather than have tired legs then doing the long run the 2nd day.

I say if you can get to run with a group on the first day then by all means do that and save the bike for the 2nd day.

I asked this question awhile back. There were several different opinions. I'm going to alternate weekends. I'll do my long run on Sat and long bike on Sunday. the next weekend I'll do the opposite.

Which one you do first each weekend will have little or no impact on race day.  Doing the long run and long ride will have a bigger impact.

I have consistently done the long run on Sat and the long ride on Sun.  I do run after every long ride on Sun but only for a short while (30 - 45 minutes) so that my body is accustom to running after riding.  Several times per training period I will eliminate the Sat run and brick it together on Sun.  The Fink plans dont really do much of this but I like to every now and then.  There is a greater chance for injury so Im keeping the full-out bricks to about once every 6 weeks.

The 'quality' of your long ride is likely to be lessened doing it this way.  Of course, doing it reversed, the 'quality' of your long run is lessened.

How important is that?  Probably marginal in the grand scheme.  I do much prefer to seperate the two (e.g., do a mid-week long run and a weekend long ride)--just as I try to seperate any of my 'quality' workouts to provide adequate recovery between them.  But if that schedule works well for you and you are able to maintain consistency week-in and week-out, then you'll be just fine come race day.  As others noted, alternating weekends of 'big ride'/'big run' is another option to consider (especially if doing two 'big' workouts starts impacting your weekday workout plans).

Depends, which sport are you stronger in?

I don't like doing my long run in the dark so this time of year I'm forced to do it on Saturday.  Much prefer to do it on Thursday and have a gap between long run and long ride.  These are my key workouts of the week so I like them to be as high of quality as possible.  When forced to do them back to back I run first to reduce the risk of injury.

I'd prob prefer doing the long run on Sat and the long ride on Sun, but I think alternating as suggested above is a great compromize. To me, running on very tired legs seems more risky (in terms of injury) than riding on tired legs, although that is how you will race, so definitely benefits to biking on Sat and running on Sun. I like JohnnyKay's idea the best though- try to separate them if possible.

I look at the weather forecast on Friday. Which ever day (Saturday or Sunday) look better that becomes the long bike day. I much prefer to run in bad weather than biking in it. By using this method over the course of a 20 week plan I get a nice mix of run first and bike first. It works for me and is a pretty simple formula. Of course if both days look bad you can flip a coin!!

Whatever method you decide to choose, I agree with some others that the real key is getting the workouts in consistently not which one comes first.

I'm with JohnnyK. I'm following the Fink plan again, except I've changed the long run from the Sat Ride / Sun Run to a mid-week run. My long runs were negatively affected by the long ride the day before. Probably for me, if I wasn't separating the long run out completely, then running on Sat would definitely be an option for me to consider.

Don't over think it. Do whatever you feel will get you to the starting line the most confident you can be.

For me and a lot of people the run is much tougher on the body. I am best served by approaching it fresh. The ride is gentler on the body and after the initial 15 minutes of warm up you probably won't notice the run fatigue. For me this works well but ride then run is much tougher. A Z2 run is way harder on the body than a Z2 ride.

I do my long run sat and long ride sunday.  First it fits in my life better.  A LOT better.  I work m-f and if I get the long run done early saturday I am able to get my shopping chores done saturday.  Also my run is pretty fragile.  I barely tolerate the minimum amount of running I need and I probably would have to pull the plug on runs frequently if done on tired legs the day after a long ride.  I will say my legs on the long ride day are tired but I tolerate biking 1000 times better than running.  Needs to be what works best for you, your body and your life.  There is no one right answer.

I would have to say that this is very dependent on what your focus is for each workout. If you are trying to simulate "race feel" then you would want to run after so you have the feeling of tired legs. However, if you want to get in a good quality long run in on fresh legs, running first would be an option. Doing this would also help you on the bike by learning to bike fatigued most of the way through and not just starting fresh as a daisy. To each their own, but IMO it really matters what the focus of each workout is for you. With that said, what is the focus of your run and bike? If I knew that I would tell you which way to go.
