Subject: Help me pick a new cell phone

I am getting a new cell phone tomorrow and need a little help picking one out.  I am going with Verizon, so if any other Verizon customers want to call me just to talk, feel free it's FREE.

I would like to have the basic bells and whistles (camera, speaker phone).  Can anyone help me out??

Thanks in advance

I have used my camera on my phone all of twice. And that was while drunk, and intended to get incriminating photos. Other than that...

It's a cell phone. Get one with good battery life, and decent antenna. Other than that, everything else IS just bells and whistles. Personally, I have a Samsung. It's nice. I prefer flip cover phones. Less chance of making calls accidentally. However, I find that it sometimes takes random pics of the inside of my pocket which is annoying as he!!.

Best advice: Go to the local Verizon store, see what they have to give you.

I have an LG7000 from Verizon.  I think they have a newer model out, but the LG phone has been good for me and my husband.  We've both dropped it a bunch of times and it still works just fine.  It has pretty much everything we could want, except for bluetooth, but I think the newer models have that.  A friend of ours has the RAZR and he likes that a lot.

I have a Samsung A650 (discontinued, replaced by newer model) which has survived anything my 2 year old could put it through. Never lost a call, battery last a fairly long time. Just wish it had speaker phone option, which I think the newer one has. I am very picky when it comes to cameras, so I stick with my SLR & digital. Cellphones are not going to give me the quality that I want.

I have the LG VX8100 and it's pretty nice.  It has a really good speaker phone (twin stereo speakers), a nice big bright screen on the inside and a light up color screen on the front.  I also like the fact it has a memory card slot in the side.  Buy a miniSD card and you can carry music and movies with you.  You can also make your own ring tones by loading an mp3 file to the phone via the memory card or bluetooth.  Same goes for wallpaper.  Just load up a jpeg image file and you're set.  A lot of people complain about the bluetooh being crippled, but I can link my phone to my laptop via bluetooth and use the connection to transfer files, contact information, call and txt message logs, ect.  I can even set it up so that my phone works like a modem, allowing me to dial up internet without physcially plugging the phone into my laptop.  The phone does take pictures and video.  something I never thought I'd use, but I do end up using it enough to make it worthwhile.  Sometimes when I'm out, I want to remember something, so I just take a picture of it.

Only issues I've had with it, is that the mic is VERY sensitive.  I have to keep it away from my mouth or the other person just hears me breathing.  The vibrator is also very STRONG and even on silent, if it goes off in a meeting, the whole room will still know.  Then again that might not be a bad thing for some people.

I've used both samsung and motorola phones in the past and didn't like either.  My samsung phone literally fell apart after about a year and a half and was always giving me problems.  I actually managed to get the blue screen of death on it a few times with some quality Engrish warnings.  My brother has a motorola and I'm less then impressed.  The chasis seems nice, but the screen is very low resolution.  The screen on my phone is almost like a laptop.  I'm also a fan of real buttons and the current trend in motorola phones is to have those buttons that are just cutouts of the key material.  Look at a razor and you'll see what I mean.

Basics: Makes & Receives calls

I've had both a regular (non-flip) and flip style phone, and I'd go back to a regular style. I got used to locking the keys to avoid making inadvertent phone calls. We've had problems with the flip-phones.

I've got a camera on the phone, but don't use it much. Wouldn't insist on one with the next phone.

We used a Nokia (Tracphone) over Christmas that had a LED flashlight built in. This was a pretty handy feature that I'd like to have on my next phone.

My old phone allowed me to enter addresses and store multiple numbers under one name. Much better than my new phone that insists on storing only one phone number per name and doesn't provide for addresses. I'm back to the paper version of an address book.

that's the one.

Try and see if they have a working model for you to play with before you buy.  I almost bought that one too, but chose this one because of the memory card slot.  When I saw my brother's I was really surprised by how grainy the screen was.  I think that phone will also take memory cards, but you can't hot swap them or load stuff from your computer onto them and just plug and play.  I think LG did a better job at making the phone integratable with other technology.

Personally, my experience with Samsung phones have been very bad. The Nokias I've owned - though basic phones - have always been rock solid and lasted for years.

I have the razr and I'm not too crazy about it. Actually, I think it's a pretty crappy phone. However, it's great to take along for bikes and runs because it's so skinny.

My husband has had a Razor, twice. He liked the phone but they both broke pretty easy. He has the Samsung Rugby2 now and it is really sturdy.

Personally I love my iPhone, cant imagine using anything else.

Whoa - resurrected thread! This is hilarious to read through - I love everyone insisting that you totally won't use a camera phone

lol I did not see the original date.

I was wondering about the one poster who said their job did not allow camera phones- I did not know there were any phones that do not have a camera...

Times really have changed fast- I don't know many people that even have a land line any more.

My company lets you *have* the camera phone, but taking photos are not allowed in most areas. Difficult to enforce, that's for sure.

I didn't see the date either and figured there were just other folks like me out there that are content with a "dumb" phone.

I miss my bag phone that had an attached handset, a huge battery with a car and home plug in charger. It cost my company around $1 a minute to use! Monthly phone bills exceeding $500 were normal for sales people.

I also had two StarTACs....great phone at the time, it was nearly indestructible.
