Yeah, it happened. I was out for my last long ride before new Orleans 70.3 next weekend. The plan was 54 miles, but a little less than 30 miles into it I was attacked by a "pack" of black lab looking dogs that were lounging in a front yard. Before I knew it I was surrounded by about 6 identical black dogs. Most of them looked young so I think it was a litter. One lunged at my leg and got a decent bite. No deep punctures, just a pretty nasty scrape about 2.5 inches long and some small nicks where the bottom teeth were. I went to the doctor and got a tetanus shot, no antibiotics since its a surface wound. Right now it is bloody, swollen and starts stinging when I stand up. Awesome. Oh yeah, I ended up going 41 miles for the ride, after being bit I just wanted to get home.

Ouch, that stinks. Glad there's no talk of rabies - that would be my concern in this part of the world. Good luck with your 70.3!

Did you call animal control and report the pack?

Hope you heal up quickly!

Ouch. I'm an animal lover but dogs do scare me for this reason. You should report the owners, sounds very irresponsible to have a pack of dogs free to run around and attack people.

Oh wow, that sucks, so sorry. I worry about just such a thing on rides and especially runs, hope you heal fast.... and totally report the owners. From now on you should carry mace, I have one on my bike and one for the run, better safe than sorry.

I'm not against people firing pepper spray or mace at a charging dog, I just can't figure out how the heck you have TIME on your bike....typically if I am chased by a dog when I'm on my bike they are on me in under two seconds...just about long enough for me to start sprinting.  And no WAY would I try to reach for and then aim pepper spray while I'm sprinting.

Please, someone that has actually done this tell me how you managed it!

The OP, really sorry you got bit.  I had a pretty close call a few weeks ago.  The dogs ran in front of my bike first which forced me to slow down for a nanosecond and let one of the dogs get on my right side.  I just yelled at it and pedaled for all I was worth...thankfully it seemed like he was more interested in chasing and barking than taking a chunk out of me.  Needless to say I won't be going that way again!

I have a squirt gun I soemtimes ride with.  I put it in the pack of my tri shorts.  There are roads with dogs that will chase me here but I try to avoid them.  Please put some antibiotic ointment on those wounds and report the owners to animal control.

I had a similar situation a  couple of weeks ago. Chased by a pack of 6 farm dogs. I was surrounded on all sides and behind - freaking scary stuff. Thankfully I was not bit. I kept yelling at them to get and they would bark back at me. Then I spoke in my sugar sweet your a good doggie voice and the lead dog stopped. The rest followed him.

So how did you get away from them after they bit you? I take it you didn't fall down or anything? So sorry this happened and right before your race. Sending you some healing vibes for a quick recovery.

Thanks everyone. I took pictures of the bite and am going round and round with whether or not to talk to the owner or call animal control. As for pepper spray, I have some for running, but honestly it all happened so fast I don't think I would have had time to get it, aim and spray. One dog ran in front of the bike so I slowed and was unclipping to kick at the dogs, but had to clip back in as I was loosing speed on the hill. The whole event was probably no more than 5 seconds. From now on I may strap the spray to my bars and have it ready when I see a dog. I'm also a huge animal lover and this hasn't changed that. I didn't make this post to start an argument against dogs or their owners. I guess I just needed to vent. I just got back from hanging with two boxers and a super sweet mutt at my brothers house. We gave the mutt a mohawk for her summer shave. So funny and such a sweet dog. The bite is still bleeding some. I'm on the sixth bandage since this morning. It didnt bleed thisr much right after it happened, I think scrubbing it clean made it mad.

If I was in your shoes, I would at LEAST report it to the owner.

What if you were a kid and the dog had bitten a child.  If the owner is aware of it now, maybe they can do something to prevent it.

I own 2 dogs and I would want to at least know what my dogs have done to someone to prevent something worse from happening.

Glad to hear that you didn't have too bad of an injury.

Report it to the home owner and police!  The owner of the dog was likely negligent in controlling his animal.  Guaranteed his home owners insurance will offer a very quick settlement to pay for your medical expenses as well pain and suffering and emotional distress.

Seriously, you get attacked and bit by a pack of dogs and you have to debate whether to take any action to prevent it happening to the next person who may not come out it as well?  I do not understand.

Call animal control immediately. If there is no AC in your county (there wasn't in mine), you'll have to call the sheriff. My husband was bitten on a run and I called the sheriff and reported it. I felt really bad about it, but I just hate it when people out here in farm land let dogs run wild. It's not safe for human or animal. Be sure you get proof positive that the dogs (all of them) have their rabies shots.

I am really sorry this happened to you! Scary, and what a bummer on your last long ride.

1) Healing {{MELON PRESS}}

2) Have a blast at Nawlins. That's what it's all about. You're likely prepared fine so just go have fun!

3) Super job for not letting this get to you.

4) Please do call some kind of authority and report this. You have been assaulted and injured. That really is how serious this is, and it should be reported for all the many reasons any kind of attack and crime should be reported. It's not your responsibility to muddle over or assign blame or consequences. Leave that to public servants.

Report it to at least one of the authorities. I don't know that you have to say anything to the owner. I didn't see any mention of someone being outside or coming to see what was going on. So would that mean 6 youngish dogs left out in the yard with no control mechanisms in place? The leg wound doesn't sound fun, but what if that was some kids' face that was torn open?

You should report this to animal control.  In the jurisdiction where I live, if an animal draws blood that animal is impounded for five days, unless the owner can show proof of a current rabies vaccine.  These dogs may have attacked others and if reported it give the authorities the legal leverage to deal with the owner.

My dog and I were attacted by two American Bull Dogs last summer while on a run ( in a very public park).  As a result I always run/ride with a spay can of Halt!.  Many bike and running stores carry it, same stuff letter carriers use.

Why bother with a squirt gun? A shot from a water bottle would be much more effective and you wouldnt have to carry something extra.

Tiffanator- Why would you even think twice about reporting this to animal control? How many other bikers do you think ride by there? Now that one dog has bitten you they will be bolder next time.

Fight for your life! I was just debating this the other day on my long ride. I came to the conclusion if a dog came out to bite at me and I wasn't quick enough to pedal away I would HTFU and fight this dog. A pack of dogs would be another thing in itself. I like my dogs just as much as tge next guy but, some dogs are bred to attack/kill and anyone who doesn't realize this is going to end up possibly getting mauled/killed. I was attacked by a pit bull about five years ago while at work!(totally blew my mind at a steel mill outside). Was omw to get a forklift to get material and out in the open the dog charged me. He latched onto my hand but needless to say thats all he did(had thick kevlar gloves on so it didnt break the skin). I choked the dog out(i know to some this sounds violent) it passed out and I called for help on the radio. We threw it in a big water bottle cage and let the security staff/dnr deal with it.

Sorry to hear about the incident.  I feel your pain.  Last year I was attacked by a pitbull on my bike.  He ended up leaving a big hole in my leg that took quite a few stiches.  I did report it and found out I wasn't the first time this dog attacked somebody.  I kept pressure on the sheriffs office until they had the dog put down.

Yes seriously.  In the end when you report it to the AC, it's not the owner that suffers but the dog.

I would drive there after my ride and have a really stern chat with the owner and give him an ultimatum before I reported it to any authority.  If he truly loves his animals, he'll do something about it.  If he tells me to go f*** myself, then I'd report him.

i ran with halt for quite awhile, until the day a dog came charging at me, i drew, aimed, and .... nothing, it didn't spray, just dribbled out. The dog retreated cause i think he knew something was up, luckily. if i get something else it will be a quality mace not halt.

I had to report when my own dog bit me, even though it was not an attack.  But trip to hospital means automatic reporting.  Reporting a dog bite/attack does not equal them putting the dogs down.  It does mean that authorities will talk to the owners though, possibly fine them, and get it on record that it happened.  Repeated offenses are what gets a dog put down.  So, if the owner ignores you (most likely) and you never reported it the next offense is probably not going to fix anything.  And the 3rd person really thanks you for not following procedures cause you allowed it to never get reported and not properly dealt with.
