Total Time = 2h 09m 46s
Overall Rank = 57M/1400/
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 14/164
Pre-race routine:

Loaded car at hotel - 5 bikes/10 wheels/5 racers/2 support crew.
Event warmup:

Biked about 12' - up the first few hills of the bike so I knew what gearing to start in and what to expect. Ran about 15', did run drills, stretched.
Swim
  • 20m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

TT start - hit the water, swam easy to the last buoy on our left, then made a straight line for last buoy on the right, saved a lot of time doing this as I saw others swimming a 90 degree turn, that there was no need for. Took the first real turn wide, next one I took tight and then stayed on the yellow rope coming in - bumped a few people here and there but an uneventful swim. Swim was short by a bit - maybe as much as 3 minutes.

Transition 1

Comments:

Moved quickly here, everything went as well as it could have.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 02m 10s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off well - took the hills easy, found my groove and just stuck with it. HR was low, watts were low and avg speed was only 22ish. At mile 15 I realized this was all I had and there wasn't much I could do about it so I just settled in and kept the ride steady. The bike was short by almost 2 miles. Quite a few newbies and TNTers out there who just hung by the yellow line instead of riding to the right. So, there was quite a bit of 'on your left' going on.
What would you do differently?:

More rest before the race
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Quick and easy, transitions were very good today. Its second nature at this point.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 44m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out very easy to see if my legs would come around. Mile 1 was 7:01, mile 2 was 7:00, mile 3 was 6:57 - so pretty much training pace for me on this day. On the way back I was passed by a guy who was running sub 6:00 and I tried to keep him within sight and my right calf knotted on a down hill and I had to back way off and just cruise the rest of the run. Top 3 AG was 4:30 away from where I finished (2:09:47) so I don't feel too disappointed in my performance. I definitely needed more rest going into the race. Legs were not feeling spry at all.
What would you do differently?:

nothing on race day - managed all the problems the best I could.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the D3 crew - met the BT crowd - what a nice bunch of guys!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rest

Event comments:

Great race - despite swim and bike being short. We had Amy pick up a 3rd in the women's 40-44 and Martina who picked up 3rd in the 25-29. Great race, well organized and after the race was over, I got to see Graceland! I had a great weekend with the entire D3 crew - about 15 of us - going out to eat - meeting up with the BT crew - and hitting Beale St on Sunday night. Looking forward to doing it again sometime!

Nice splits ... swim time is remarkable.

As far as hanging on the yellow line, there was quite a bit of that at the Gulf Coast HIM the other weekend ... and these were presumably seasoned athletes given the pace they maintained + distance of the race.

These, of course, are probably the people who are "too good" to go to the pre-race meeting (where they are reminded by the USAT officials about the common position fouls) and the first to cry foul when dinged with a variable time penalty.

Still, rather have someone inadvertantly block a lane than cheat in drafting.

Congrats on a successful race for you and the athletes you coach.

Great time Mike, and the swim was smokin'! So for the bike what was your original goal again? If I did the math correctly based on some info I got from your log your FTP is around 265 right? If your watts avg for the race was 238 was then your IF for the race was like .90  correct? Do you think that was a bit too high for an Oly or was that your plan and you were just not properly rested? Sorry to bombard you with my Qs but I am debating myself what IF/NP to shoot for at my next Oly which I am hoping to break 2:00 hrs, but since the run is my strongest sport I don’t want to kill my legs during the bike
Anyway, congratulations!

Glad to know that you are not only an awesome coach but also you are such a GREAT athlete

amiine - 2006-05-23 11:16 AM Great time Mike, and the swim was smokin'!

Swim was short.

So for the bike what was your original goal again? If I did the math correctly based on some info I got from your log your FTP is around 265 right?

>>yes, 265. My FT is around 275 so maybe 265 was too high now that I think about it. I should have been shooting for 250ish. However, in the race I was 'chasing watts' and that means I was looking for 260s - when I didn't see that I backed off, but it might have been too late.

If your watts avg for the race was 238 was then your IF for the race was like .90  correct?

>>FT is about 275 so IF was 86%.

Do you think that was a bit too high for an Oly or was that your plan and you were just not properly rested?

>>Not properly rested and/or I was chasing the higher watts which killed my run legs. Not sure that run was right either - most Pros run faster than 35:00.

Sorry to bombard you with my Qs but I am debating myself what IF/NP to shoot for at my next Oly which I am hoping to break 2:00 hrs, but since the run is my strongest sport I don’t want to kill my legs during the bike
Anyway, congratulations!

>>No worries on the questions buddy! NP for OLY is .95 to 1.0 according to Coggan/Allen power meter book. I would say right around LT or a little less.

Glad to know that you are not only an awesome coach but also you are such a GREAT athlete

>>Ha! Thanks for the complement. Someday I'll run like I used to, then I'll be a little happier about my race. Thank you though! Which OLY are going under 2:00 at? Monster?

It was a pleasure meeting you and your group at the dinner. I wish that my time wasn't so tight that night, I would have loved to sit and talk to you for a minute. Congrats on the awesome times. I could only wish about putting up a performance like that.

Well I was planning to go under 2:00 at Mooseman Oly but I just realize it is not a 40K but a 44K bike so I might have to adjust my goal. We'll see... I want to get my Pro card ASAP so I eligible to race continental ITU cups and gain experience getting my a$$ kicked by the real speedy big boys...

Congrats Mike!

If I put together the 3 legs and 2 transitions you did, I wouldn't change anything either!

great race Mike! Shame about the right calf, what happened with that not co-operating?
Your swim time was fabulous, wow!! The bike was real strong, and your run, even though you got that calf cramp was FAST! Thankyou for posting. Isn`t Memphis alot of fun, I love Beale st, red beans and rice, perfect for after a tri.
