Pre-race routine:

left home at 5:35 - arrived at 6:20. Registered, found my transition spot and warmed up
Event warmup:

Bike wu 15' climbing the hill we start for the race. Then a short run warm up of about 5' with stretching. Swam about 200 yds then treaded water for 5' before gun went off
Swim
  • 11m 5s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started up front with a couple of Pros and some national caliber AG athletes. At first buoy, I was about 20 yds back - was doing great and then all of the sudden I was off swimming by my lonesome. Got back in the thick of the swim and hammered the way back in to make up for lost time. This is a sprint after all. RED LINE all the way!

Comments:

Up a big hill - sat in and just kept my cadence high - over 84 - then got up to speed and just pegged it. A flatter and more windless course, could not by found. This was extremely fast - my speed was consisently hovering around 25-30. Just a great course. So fast. And I felt good too. :-) Legs were working hard, breathing was at a good effort and the only two things I looked at today were cadence/mph. I had watts covered on my Ergomo just so it wouldn't be a distraction. See - you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Under the bridge, saw Tanner right in front of me - then saw Eric in front of him. Caught them both right away and kept them away. Always pass with authority. Caught another guy, Matt, that I see at the track each week. Real nice guy. He looked fit and I had to drop him quickly. Did that and was solo for a bit. Hit the first mile at 6:45 and with the hills, that was a very good time. Right after mile 1, we went up a wee bit more and made the final down hill and back onto the flats. Going down the hill, I experienced something I hadn't in a long time - MY LEGS. Wow. I was actually feeling good and running like I can. Very nice to feel like that. I opened it up on the flats and I was looking to catch this one guy who has beaten me the last few years. I closed in on him, but at the line he got me by :20. With about 600m to go another racer passed me, and I hung in a for a bit, but he just had more than me today. I have been racing this guy too, and now I think I found the chink in his armor...so all good knowledge for later. Once he passed and I couldn't hand on, I shut it down and cruised in. No one was behind me and I still have to race Bolder Boulder on Monday so no sense in emptying the tank.

Warm down:

Drank lots including my Hammer Pro Whey - ran for a few mintues - biked when I got home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much, I was RED LINE the entire way.

Event comments:

D3ers did great. Jen D was 9th AG, Beth was 2nd, Ida was 2nd. Great race - looking forward to doing it again next year!

Hey Mike,

Congratulations on a good race.  It was interesting to read your race report.  It must feel good to see the people you train do so well.

Another great race!  What a weekend.  No wonder your legs were balking at Boulder after a race like this one.  Great effort.

Mike,

I didn't know you kept your workout log on BT.  Nice race!!!!  That swim time is amazing.  I have a long way to even think of any kind of swim that fast.  But this about you.  Nice job.
