Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I didn't have an engagement ring for my first marriage. No big deal. Second one, my husband wanted to get me a larger stone. We are both nurses, at the time I was working in an ICU and I said No to the larger rings. I didn't want to lose or damage it with all the glove wearing I was doing, or lifting/ moving pts around....It's about 1/3 carat marquis which was all I wanted. He got me another ring for my 50th birthday a couple years ago that has 3 square cut diamonds with channel set stones |

We talked about getting married. I had no job and it did not look like I was going to get one for awhile. She wanted a $36k ring which was little less than my student loans were at the time. Needless to say I took the money and went to grad school instead. |

![]() | ![]() Hey there, I'm not sure that there is significance to the size. There are so many different engagement rings of all sizes and shapes. I think that the ring is significant to each couple as a symbol of their love for each other. You can check out James Allen education center for more info on engagement rings and diamonds...I learned a lot from them when I was looking for an engagement ring. http://www.jamesallen.com/education. Hope you find your answer. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife got her mother's diamond that was left over after she got divorced. I was worried about bad karma but 16 years later it seems to have worked. I got off pretty cheap but did have it reset. Funny diamond ring story: Around year 10 of marriage 'we' decided that we would upgrade her ring. A friend knew a diamond broker in NY. I called him on the phone and 24 hours later, no deposit, no credit card, no real information exchanged, an envelope arrived on my door step with three very large, very nice diamonds in it. Holy cow. This guy, again, a friend of a friend, was offering me a phenomenal deal. I took the diamond to a local jeweler who had made me a piece of jewelry in the past. Told him I wanted it put in a setting. He asks where the diamond came from and I told him. He goes in the back room for a few minutes, comes out and says, "I will get you the same quality/size diamond for $200 dollars less." Ummmm.... OK? I call the NY diamond broker and he says, "I'll go $200 less than your jeweler." Ummmm...OK? I tell my jeweler this. He goes in the back room, comes out with a flawless, colorless diamond, 0.5 Karats larger than the previous diamond and says, "I'll give you this one for the same price as the other guy will sell you the smaller one." Ummmm..... OK? What the heck is going on here? Am I on candid camera? I just wanted the original diamond set. I call the NY guy and he says that there was no way he could beat that price--just send the diamonds back and if I ever needed a diamond in the future, feel free to call him. So, that is the crazy story about how my wife got a fairly large, darn near perfect, diamond. Still can't figure out exactly what happened there. I guess you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My husband and I were very young when we got engaged. He went with my best friend to pick out a ring. Luckily, she was able to protect him somewhat from salespeople who made him feel bad for "only" spending $650 on a nice 1/3 carat solitaire. He only had $500 cash and set up payments for the rest (paid off his next payday). So glad that we didn't go into extended debt for my ring. Being so young I think the size was somewhat important to me as a sign to my family that we were committed and did have enough discretionary income for a nice ring. For our 10 year anniversary (married almost 13 now), we upgraded the diamond for a 1-carat radiant cut solitaire (rectangle with special facets). We probably wouldn't have, except the store had a policy that paid us 150% of what he paid for the ring towards the new diamond. I felt a little materialistic for "upgrading", but when I look at it now it reminds me of our 10 year anniversary and all our years together. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I confess to going hog wild on my ex's ring. Little over 1 ct in the main stone, it was a super high quality diamond. It got really expensive because she wanted a platinum band with diamonds around it. I think the rest of the ring cost more than the main stone. Of course her motivation was bling/ shock and awe. Kind of like the rest of her personality... no substance. If I get married again I'll get "her" what she wants, but I'll let her know I'd much rather get a cool ring that she'll wear and buy her an awesome bike instead. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diamonds are valued by cut, clarity, and color besides just carat. Some smaller diamonds can have huge pricetags. Besides, the larger the ring, the more likely a thief will notice and cut her finger off to get the ring. So by a small one and tell her you are just looking out for her safety. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() erothem - 2012-11-03 6:06 AM Diamonds are do more rare than other gemstones not only because of the price control of the De-Beers but also because of their reaction to light, sparkle and hardness. It is recommended to read more about diamond education at http://www.rothemcollection.com/diamonds/diamond-education.asp

![]() My husband and i started with a small channel set ring, and two custom made rings for wedding bands using diamonds from my great grandmothers ring. For our tenth, I upgraded my bands. To me, a ring is just a symbol of marriage and commitment. But not as important as the act of commitment and upholding that commitment. A ring is a symbol, but doesn't mean crap if you aren't loyal. I only wear my rings about half the time, even though i insured them, just because i don't want to lose or damage them during training or racing. Edited by ironultrared 2012-11-04 8:54 PM |
