Pre-race routine:

Worried about whether the race would be canceled or not, & how far 500 meter is when you actually lay it out in a lake. Visited with the guy set up beside me, told him just to move my stuff if it was in the way, he said you'll be long gone when I get here, this is my 1st one & I'm nervous as hell. I stuck out my hand and said welcome to the club.

Got to race area prbly by 6:30, which would have gave us time to test water & go through the pre-race meeting. Ended up have 3 hrs to vist & find some other 1st timers.

Had a bagel at about 5am with a Carb Boom gel on it, & water. By 10am race start, I was feeling hungry.
Event warmup:

Mainly stretching, as I was more concerned with finishing the swim.

Swim
  • 18m 38s
  • 547 yards
  • 03m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't warm up in the water which was a mistake. After being in for a few minutes water was fine, but the initial shock had me doing sidestroke. Good thing was it never entered my mind to quit.

Swim really wore me out.

What would you do differently?:

Start out swimming freestyle, couldn't have gone the whole way, but it would have helped my time & energy expended immensley.
Transition 1
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Wearing the tri suit really helped. Being wore out from the swim didn't. Jogged from beach to transition area, then walked to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe take the gel pack while in transition instead of out on the bike.
Bike
  • 39m 35s
  • 9.94 miles
  • 15.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I think the course was well laid out, & even though traffic wasn't blocked, the course wasn't very heavily traveled.

I was still bonked from the swim when I hit the hill, but recovered nicely for the rest of the ride, knowing I couldn't really push too hard with the run still to come.
What would you do differently?:

Didn't have my Polar setup correctly, so was flying blind as far as cadence, HR, & speed, So I should have made sure of this, with all the standing around time I had
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

No problems here, even took time to tie my shoes twice to make sure they were tight.
What would you do differently?:

Take time to put on HR strap
Run
  • 30m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

After the way the day started, just didn't feel like I could push it too much here. Breathing was soo hard that I got a slight side ache from the liquid on the bike & beginning of the run.
What would you do differently?:

Take time to put on HR strap before bike section.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around drank water & ate a banana & another gel cause I didn't feel like pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Blowing up on the swim

Event comments:

Very good course for a 1st race

Hey 210. I remember seeing you...I was 214 and it seems our times were very close...except you pulled away from me in the run portion. Looks like you came out of the water just in front of me. Whew...I'm glad that swim is over with....I need to improve my swimming. I remember seeing the your javelin tri suit as well. I plan on posting some pictures later tonight...maybe you'll recognize me.

Congrats on a great race. What's next?

Great job! The first one is always the hardest because you aren't sure how you are going to do on the swim! Don't worry about that! The next one will be easier! You did really great! Doesn't it feel good to be a 'triathlete'?

Same to you!

I need to vastly improve my swimming too. You probably seen me stand up to run close to shore, looked like I was drunk & bout fell over.

I'm sure I remember you now, werent you either in rack 7 or 8? I was pretty nervous until I started talking to the other newbies.

Gonna ditch the Jav suit & go with top & bottom. I seen the buoy's laid out for the long course, & wasn't thinking straight. Thought they were going to do 2 laps & us 1; dang that looks like a long 500 meters.

I noticed there are some small Tri's at Great Bend & maybe Wilson lake. Maybe make the trip for the Salty Dog. It'd be great if we could all meet up again at a few others when we have idea who everyone is.

Way to go! My wife was number 212. She probably would recognize all of you.

I should have been about there too, but I made the mistake of registering for the "open" heat, and switched the day before so they put me at number 112 - which was WAY faster than could ever be justified on the swim.

Your comments are pretty close to what I felt - hungry by the time of the start!

We will have to look at some of the other races you are mentioning. We're from Lincoln, Nebraska, and really liked the Kansas hospitality and attitude of everyone there!

I'll chime in. I don't think I'm going to make the Tri in Nebraska because I'm going to be on vacation.

The Salty Dog race is in Hutchinson in August. The Topeka Tinman Tri is a week from this Saturday. It has sprint and olympic courses. I am thinking about doing it....the swim is only 300m! Now that I have one race under my belt...I'm ready to go.

Any other races anyone else is considering in the area??

I remember seeing that chart several months ago! Wow, that's crazy. I've gotta study that thing.

I'd like to make the Topeka race. . . Hutchinson is a long ways from Lincoln, Nebraska, however.
