Are there any fellow slow people around? I love reading threads and race reports but they make me feel so slow! I'm not particularly competitive and am always proud of myself for even attempting to be fit but when it comes to goal times and paces I'm going for survival and completion! Anyone else out there not necessarily in it to win it?

Thank you for posting.

Remember that your slow is someone else's fast. And my fast is someone else's slow!

And all of us doing it, for fun, fitness, competition, or survival are INFINITELY farther ahead than someone who never left the couch ...

Yep. I'm out there to complete (not COMPETE) and improve and do the best I can do.

I'm a decent enough biker, I think; at least I'm happy with my bike speed. I'm slower than some but faster than a lot of people I know. I'm very much a middle-of-the-pack runner and I've dealt with some injury this year, so these days I'm on the slower side of that. And I think I'm a slow swimmer no matter who you talk to.

I'm totally enjoying IM training because I'm just focused on completing the distance comfortably and I'm putting no pressure on myself as far as speed, I just want to make all the cutoffs!

I have never NEVER entertained the thought of winning..  For me, I'm a Super clyde.  I would consider it a great success if I could get down to 220 pounds.  So with that said, I like to consider myself a pretty fast swimmer (For people my size).  I did an 880 yard swim in about 18 minutes in my last race.  I like to think I'm a pretty fast biker, (Averaged 18.8 0n a rolling hills 15 mile bike) and I am a TERRIBLY TERRIBLE runner.  I just can't run the three miles.  even if I could, it would be way slow.  I am working on it though. (15 minute miles for this guy during the race)...

Also, I don't do speed drills, or super intense workouts.  I can bike for miles and miles, and I can OWS for a mile, but I am never exhausted at the end.  Just getting out there and doing it is more than I have ever done..

Ha! I'm the same way. I see some of those speeds and know I will never be that fast. But I have fun and in the last 2 years I have gotten much fitter and surprisingly even a little quicker. I will never win but I will never quit either. Too much fun and too good for me. I have met great people and always remember that I'm much faster than the folks on the couch Laughing

10-12 MPH for the bike

3:00/100m swim.

I win.

GatorDeb I think I am your competitionEmbarassed.  Feels like I am never getting out of the water.  It is all in good fun though.  My sister and I have a good time with it.  I just keep thinking no matter how slow I am, I am not on the sofa.  Besides it is really fun to chat with the people at the back of the pack. They are all so friendly.

Be careful when asking for someone slow to compare yourself to.  You might find that the people that call themselves slow will still FLY past you....Laughing

It's all relative.  Don't compare yourself to everyone else. Just to your former self. Your goals need not be anyone else's.

I will always remember the IMAZ 2011 (I think) RR where the OP stated "I paid for 17 hours and decided to get my money's worth".

As has already been said, your slow is someone else's fast.  I  might be slow, myself, but I am improving every day and am MUCH faster than if I'd never started.

I'm faster than I think I am... Somehow I've got a few AG medals but I still think I'm pretty slow.

I'm the guy joking around at the start walking to the back and asking "Is this where the slow swimmers start?"

Even slow people can podium.  I've done it.  You just need to find smaller race.

I am a slow poke as well, a tad slower than GatorDeb. I am just happy to finish a race, to achieve being called a triathlete is enough- I will not podium a race until I am the only one in my AG. But that gives me incentive to keep going- my goal is to stick to it till I am >70 yrs old so I can collect medals !

Oh, yes yes yes, you have company. I am slow! I'm not in it to win it, no way! I'm in it because signing up for races keeps me motivated, gives me something to be excited for, and because I love swimming and biking. I hope to one day love running, by far my sloooooowest sport. Oh wait. I think swimming I'm slower, but I just love being in water. So yeah, I'm slow! And I'll probably never podium but that's okay by me!

Partial credit:

I am slow in the water.

But pretty quick on the bike and also ok on the run.

As Meatloaf once said, "Two out of Three Ain't Bad."

Been there, done that.  I do 5K's and an occasional 10K to keep from getting too far out of shape, and to get my daughter running.  Now I'm going to do triathlons again (24+ years since the last one).  My daughter has medal-ed in almost every 5K she's been in outside of high school XC.  Last year at the Jekyll Turtle Crawl 5K I medal-ed.  I was shocked.  I never medal.

I'll be even more shocked if I do it in a triathlon.  I see 5K times in the sprint that are _way_ faster than I can run a 5K without the swim and bike preceding it.

My goal right now is to feel good at the end and not be DFL in my age group.  My stretch goal is to be in the top 50%.  That may take some a bit of practice time.

I've heard the same said about golf when the scores get high, "we're getting our money's worth!"

I don't like to think of myself being slow, but I like to think of it as a value proposition to get my money's worth - and I am winning

Love this thread. Being my first yer doing tri's it seems I learn every race. I've done four sprints this year (missed two with a back injury) and doing the Rev3 Olympic in Maine. I wanted to do the half, but life has gotten in the way of training a bit. I realized I'd be better to adjust my goals and the timeline. I'm slow. My first couple of events, I think I was the last one out of the water. I have a strategy for every race though. Swim well enough to get on the bike (72 out of 92 last event). Pass as many people as I can on the bike since I'm a solid rider...then try to keep as many people from passing me back on the run (87 out of 92 with a pulled calf coming off the bike last event). I realize I'm a slow runner. Horribly slow. I average 11:15-12:00 miles typically. But I'm thankful to be able to run. I've had nine knee surgeries and I've shattered my ankle requiring two surgeries. To be able to do events and finish and work on racing my own times is an improvement.

I don't need a medal to feel good. I need self improvement. In being realistic, changing to the Olympic distance in August was a good thing for me. It'll keep it a challenge and fun. And it'll make me want that half next year. If I did the half, I might struggle through it and hate it by the end for not being prepared. That would push me away from triathlons with a negative experience. The Olympic will leave me feeling accomplished, and at the same time give me the taste if the next level and make me want to push even more. I've met some awesome people doing triathlon this year. It's been an adjustment from undersized football lineman, to oversized triathlete. But in the end it's about me and my development as an "athlete" (and I use that term loosely).

I even got my girlfriend to do her first this year after having only ridden bicycles for a month or two. And we are entering her daughter in a kids tri next month...who might be the bet runner of us all at 10 years old...she already has a 5k to her credit at nine!

Have fun. And keep developing yourself!

Shane
