I feel like White Lake always seems so terrible is because it never fails that it's the first weekend of high heat and everyone has been training in the nice spring weather. At least with a race day in June you can become acclimated to the heat and learn how to fuel properly.

^^ This.  It is almost always the first 88-90 degree day of the year. The humidity isn't usually that high in May, but with a non-shaded course on the first hot day of the year...it can suck the soul out of you.  One year it was 89 for the HIM....the next day...high of 78.  That is just the luck that is White Lake.  The year I did it, it was 88.  The next weekend when my wife did it, 89.

First time I did White Lake it was around 90 and really was one of the first very hot days of the summer. The next year, the first weekend was 78. Problem is that I did White Lake 2 (second weekend) when it was 94 at noon! And I have not gone back :-)

My idea of wetsuit legal is the 83.8 (the top of the legal range) as I will never worry about being on the podium or any rolldown stuff! Does that increase my chances???

Many thanks, japarker24 and louiskie for T1 & T2 info.

May I also ask what your thoughts are about White Lake HIM and this potential course? I know WL can be so hot, and that's May so I'm worried about the heat factor for the Raleigh race. I'm just trying to decide which might be a better fit for me. Again, this newbie appreciate the help.

Besides the heat at WL the course is very flat on both bike and run. The Raleigh course will not be flat. Not mountainous in Raleigh but solid rollers throughout. The run in Raleigh will have a nice quick last 4-5mi, but the middle section as you leave Meredith up to the Art Museum and back to Meredith will include some sharp little climbs on the trail. The profile of the run can look bad but from the start out to Meredith is more of a continuous, gentle, uphill compared to a couple of big hills.

I'm really leaning toward doing this one. I've had to take off several years due to work load, but that is tapering down now. Plus, this can be an easy way to fulfill the race requirement when I win the IM Kona lottery slot...

How difficult will it be to get in this race? Is it going to sell out in minutes like most of the IronMan-branded events, or take a little longer since it's an inaugural race in a new place?

Who knows...can go both ways- either people are starved for an IM race here and it sells out fast or they are hesitant and it takes a while. I have no idea. I think it will sell out fast in the first couple of years but then interest will fall a little to a steady, but not crazy, state because there are two other solid triathlon event companies with a good presence in this area so there are plenty of other races that will continue to compete. Thats what I think. But then what do I know.

LOL. Trouble causer. Daryn, will this be your return to HIM action if you can't get healed up in time for B2B?

IMHO, this race will not sell out very quickly for the following reasons:

1. IM 70.3 races (with very rare exceptions, i.e. IM 70.3 Oceanside CA) do not sell out very fast.

2. Raleigh is not a destination location.

3. There are aspects of this race that are going to turn people away such as the 2 transitions, hills on the bike, and hills on the run.

Also, as has been mentioned before, there are other (cheaper) options for athletes in this area.

In my opinion it will sell out quickly. Not in minutes, but a few days. Raleigh in centrally located and the early entry fee of $199 is cheap by WTC standards.

Pricing is the same for most/all other 70.3 more than a few other one in the US.  The $200 entry fee is good for two weeks.

No way this sells out in days or weeks.  Augusta doesn't sell out until July and is widely regarded as a well run, good course 70.3. No offense, but people aren;t going to flock to Raleigh. I don't care how nice the locals think it is in RDU, it isn't a destination people get excited about.

Sure it may sell out, but it won't be in September (IMHO).

+1

I wanted to do a HIM next spring and don't want to do White Lake as a matter of fact I didn't want to do W/L this year either and went to Virginia to do Kinetic HIM at Lake Anna State Park...a very good race and good course.

I think there is a lot of folks (not me) who will only race WTC events it is centrally located between DC and Charlotte. The first IM race in the Carolina's

IMO the way IM runs there Transition area's is superior to the other race company's

Lot's of Buzz for the first year...I think a couple days it will sell out I'll be on line 8/31 getting in.

Horrible time of the year to have a half in NC...It's going to be WAY too hot. I was excited about it...at first. After I thought about it, not excited anymore.

Also, I don't think this thing will sell out until close to the race date.

I echo the sentiment that Raleigh just doesn't have that excitement factor...Sure, it is prob nice, but...

d00d, I chuckled when I read this. I had JUST written essentially the same thing in my training log after my long ride/failed brick this morning. I was excited at first too...and then I thought about how June in NC feels when running in the middle of the day. Thats when my excitement waned a little. I am definitely in for cheering people on though and having a little party on the sidelines :-)

And halfpint, you are a hardcore IMLOU survivor...you just made heat your b!tch!

Link to the agenda Mark spoke of.  I'd volunteer, but wouldn't race it.  Holy hotness!

http://raleighnc.gov/content/BoardsCommissions/Documents/CityCouncil/AgendaPacket/07RoadRaces.pdf

Alright, I know I said no, but this one does have me thinking.  I'm not getting any younger, and my time to do these long races might be growing short.  Maybe 2013 is the year of the WTC for me.  Will mull it over during this nice long weekend.  Do a warmup 70.3 in my backyard, and look for something a bit longer for the fall...I know I said "never" on going longer than 100 miles, but...
