Not to be confused with hoof and mouth disease

My 2 year old has this, and he's pretty miserable. Doctor (and daycare provider and friend who is nurse) said that nothing can be done (no vaccine, ointments, meds, etc.) so we've just been giving him Tylenol to help with the discomfort (likely has a sore throat).

Any tips/ tricks to make him more comfortable? Normally he sleeps 12 hours a night, but last night he just wanted to be held and cuddled -- which was sweet and really nice until my husband and I needed to get to sleep.

So sorry that H caught it.  It seems to commonly go around the daycares here.  :-(  We haven't experienced it so far, so no advice.  However, I hope he feels better soon!

ETA: It's scary to me that you call H "2 years old" because I'm still in denial that LJ is almost 1.

My 3 yr old had it a couple of months ago, and you basically have to just wait it out. The worst part seemed to only last a few days. The skin peeled around his feet pretty bad, so we had to keep socks on him during this part.

Unfortunately - not much to be done other than wait it out. The good news is (if I remember correctly) - it is like chicken pox in that once you've had it, you won't get it again (or if you do - the severity is greatly reduced). The doctor also told us that you may be exposed to it as well - but the symptoms are different in older folks (mouth sores and fever).

I think one of the hardest things for me being a parent (other than the middle school mood swings) is watching your children in pain and knowing you can't fix it. It will get better.

Sorry for H, I hope he feels better.

When I first saw a sign for this at daycare, I totally freaked out.  Then the Mrs informed me that it was different than hoof and mouth, and I felt a little better.

Poor H!  It's been going around our daycare, too.  Unfortunately, I don't think there's much to be done other than waiting it out.  I hope he is feeling better soon!  And, I hope that you and your husband can get some sleep.  We usually alternate nights on holding/cuddling the sick baby so that at least one of us gets a good night's sleep.

It must be going around the area. My co-worker from Ellicott City has 2 year old twins who had it this week.

Ugh my two year old had it and it wasn't fun.

Have you tried alternating tylenol and ibuprofen? That seemed to help us a little more.

Yes! I had no idea we could do that until recently -- it's been a lifesaver

Trishie,

As I recall, we used to concoct a "magic mouthwash" for this when I worked in the ER.  Not entirely sure what the docs used  in it.....just symptomatic treatment....but it definitely helped.  heck with your peds for this.  I am sure they have heard of it

Hope H feels better soon.

My 5 year old had it a couple years ago. Mouth sores, sore throat. Couldn't talk cause he was all swole up. Just had to wait it out and feed him liquidy foods. We made him wear mittens to keep his hands out of his mouth, basically to protect the rest of us. But it took about a week start to finish before it went away. We did tylenol also.

summer always lots out outbreaks

get your doctor to write a prescription for "special mouthwash": benadryl, maalox and viscous lidocaine - will help your son be able to drink and possibly even eat.

Just a curious question, how would one get a 2 year old to use the magic mouthwash?

Sincerely,

childless

I would think with a 2 yr old your worry would be with him/her ingesting it in large quantities.  So really just dip your finger in it and rub it around his mouth, tongue, throat, and teeth.  He'll/she'll get enough of it.

P.S. Why the "childless" signature?
