Overall Rank = 474/1067
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 67/112
Pre-race routine:

I had to be there at 5am to pick up my race packet since I couldn't do that the day before. Tried to sleep after I got the packet, but instead just layed in the truck for about an hour. Ate a Clif bar and granola bar and drank some water.
Event warmup:

No swimming - just a little light stretching.
Swim
  • 18m 34s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Even though I was well conditioned, once again my swim went poorly. After about 150 yards, my breathing was too high. There were 2 times that I briefly (~15 sec) stopped to catch my breath and 2 other times that I did the breast stroke to catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get in an open water swim before the race. Once again, this was my first OWS of the season.
Transition 1
  • 04m 53s
Comments:

I was going to wear a regular wicking shirt for the bike and run, and bring my Camelback with me. At the last minute, I decided to wear a biking shirt instead (it was a Father's Day gift and I wanted to wear it). But I forgot to transfer the Acceleraid to a water bottle and I forgot to put a gel in my shirt - so I went without both for the ride. I also forgot my race belt and stupidly put my race number on my biking shirt with only 2 pins. Realizing this would be a PIA during the ride, I took off my race number before the ride, then had to put it back on after the ride.
What would you do differently?:

For a sprint race, wear the bike jersey but make sure I have my water and gel. Also, make sure I have my race belt.
For a longer race, wear a North Face or similar shirt and the Camelback. if I get a flat during a sprint, my race is done; but during an Oly or 1/2, I would take the time to fix the flat and continue - so I need the tube and pump that I keep in the Camelback.
Bike
  • 50m 46s
  • 17 miles
  • 20.09 mile/hr
Comments:

The biking went well. About 1/3 into the race, I was passed by a small (~5'0" 90#) woman who provided me the inspiration to get my butt moving faster. Although she did finish the bike portion before me, I couldn't let someone so small beat me so badly (I always felt that for the bike, size helps).
What would you do differently?:

nothing really.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

If I didn't have to put my race number back on my shirt, it would have been a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a race belt.
Run
  • 23m 53s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went pretty well. My legs were a bit stiff from the bike, but after the first few minutes, they loosened up and could pick up the pace. If this was an Oly, I wouldn't have been able to make it though - I only had about 5 or 6 k in the legs.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around for a bit and stretch for a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming issues and T1 performance.

Sorry I didn't get to meet you or your wife today. I figured our pregnant wives could have hung out and watch us flounder in the water. Good job, too bad about the transitions though.

Great race! The nice thing about having a bad transition is that its easy to do better there next time - you don't have to put in hours training to get faster.

Nice race yesterday! Did you just run straight from the finish line to the truck to get in that nap or what?! I thought I'd see you after the race.

Even though you paused a few times during the swim, I think your avg split isn't that bad given your non-swimming background.

Quite the T1 story!  Ha.

You smoked the run!!  Good for you!
