I was going to say 'famous for being famous', but that works too.

And I was going to say independently wealthy, but these all apply.

As soon as I saw this thread, I thought the same thing as a lot of you.

The best job to have is none at all, but still be rich!!

That being said, I think a job where you are self employed can be the best since you set your own schedule.  I run a small house painting business, and it works out very well for me and my training and race scheduling!! :D

tstl - 2012-11-06 10:17 PM Pilot, but depending on the situation, that can also be the worst profession for triathlon. Mine is pretty ideal right now- I go for free time over extra $$, so I only work 2-3 days/week, and I'm home virtually every night. I was able to ramp up to 20 hrs/week for IMAZ without even sacrificing much family time. I feel very lucky :-)

Even better is being a retired pilot!! Cool

This. Slightly different job (Information Security Manager), but work from home for a very large IT corporation. Allows all the benefits below. (And I thought I was the only one who "cheated" by bringing the laptop to the trainer to watch for e-mails while I rode. LOL.)

Would not have been able to train for IMLP without this situation.

Sr Systems Admin for a software company.  HQ is in Santa Barbara CA.  I live in NJ and work from home.  Plenty of time for training.  I can take an extended lunch and go for a long run or swim.  I can get on the bike trainer in the afternoon and simply watch my laptop while on the bike to watch for incoming emails and any issues that pop up.

It's great.  I'm lucky.

I am a Cop and am in a division where I work M-F 8am-4pm. It has been alot easier to train on this schedule because I can swim before work and do stuff after. I havent alwasy been on this schedule but it definately helps.

Tom Demerly. - 2012-11-06 8:17 PM Firefighter?

I am a career firefighter, and it is a great job.  The downside is that most of us (not all) end up working a second part time job somewhere.  That's partially by choice, but also due to the need to make ends meet for the family.  There's a wide range of salaries in the field, but nobody is getting rich being a fireman.  We tend to trade that money made up front for more security in retirement (without getting into all the politics).  Even so, it does offer a bit of flexibility for training.

I'd think anything "from home" or "consulting" would be most ideal.

Also teachers would seem to have a leg up with being able to put in heavy hours in the summer preparing for a big race at end of summer...

Personally I work a corporate job (9-5ish) but have no kids so it's easy for me to get in my training before/after work and on the weekends.

It's not the job, single and no kids is the key.  When I was single, I could train 4 hours a day and work 8 no problem.  Wife and kid take more time and money, so training takes a back seat.

Still worth it, though....

I work a corporate job (but out in a plant) 8 (ish) to 5/6.

My wife works pretty much the same hours, without kids we have enough time to train and money to buy the gear we like.

We even manage to get 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night (as sleep is important for effective training).

I travel a few times a year, but if I do I work my travel so that I can get my workout in. This includes selecting hotels based on gym and pool.

I wish I had been into training when I had a job that was work at home - plus traveling by car.  When I traveled I was always done working by 3 or so (set my own appts) and I could have easily gone for a bike ride/run.    At home bviously it would have been easy to step outside at any point.

However, that requires a lot  more discipline than I think I have.  I would often still be in my PJs an hour before my husband was getting home from work, because I would hit the computer when I got up and never leave.

Now I have a very boring office job that works well enough for me for training. I can ride to/from work, run whenever (I work at a University so no one cares what I wear, how my hair looks), and it's close to an affordable gym.  No kids so I can come home whenever.  Also, ample time to surf BT, plan races, shop for gear, etc.

But the best would be independently wealthy or at least with a generous spouse who doesn't care if you work much/ at all.

Eh......I have 3 kids still at home....we train together. My wife takes no time, she has her interests too, which also involve the kids. (she'll workout with us, I WON'T go near her horses)  If you want to do triathlon the best job and situation is the one you are in.  From my view the key to having time to train and stay active is simple.......throw your TV remote away.  As a family we are constant motion.....plenty of time to work/train/play/eat/homework etc.

I wanted to see what everyone feels is the best job/business for a Triathlete. I am thinking one that affords time to train and race, but still have the finances for the gear! Maybe it is the job/business you have!

I have to delete this idea because i don't want anyone to steal it.

holy crap it is a glorious idea.

I agree. I am a stay at home parent with 4 kids and while the youngest two are now in school 2.5 hours a day I still struggle to find a couple hours for me. And any $ that might go toward gear ends up going to dance, soccer, hockey, basketball, braces, sat prep class, etc.

Spouse is a pilot and on most trips has time to run or hit the gym but could never get in any time swimming or on a bike. And when home if anyone is going to get time away from the kids it is me!!

I'd say whatever has regular hours and little to no commute - or at least the commute goes near a pool. It's nice to be slightly time shifted from normal work hours so I can go to the pool when it's less busy.

I'm surprised it took to the 3rd page to suggest this.

Why not get paid to be a Triathlete?

I work 30-40 hr a week as a butcher and my boss helps sponser me, as long as I wear at the very least a hat from work while I race. Makes it easy to get race day off. I also do some run/fitness training on the side so work is training.

bigmike3541 - 2012-11-06 7:49 PM I work as a trader.  Very regular/predictable hours

I'm a trader as well, but as we've moved into more of a global market place my hours have become anything but regular/predictable.  Commuting kills A LOT of my time too.

I am an engineer in biotech manufacturing and I cover 1st shift so I work 8am-4pm. I usually swim before work and then head to gymnastics practice, run, fitness class or something after work. I really like my schedule. With my current job, I'll never be able to work from home or have flexible hours, but because my schedule is so set (rarely do I work past 4 or on a weekend) I don't mind. Plus the pay is pretty good.

I'd say consulting would be a sweet gig, but only if it's consulting that allows you to work from home or remotely. I worked as a consultant for a bit, but it required travel to the site every week. People flew in for 4-5 days, then flew home on the weekend. And you could choose to take on/ not take on projects depending on your training schedule. Or only work part time.

Grad Student maybe. But that one is tough. My bf is a grad student so he has a VERY flexible schedule and since he's in science, it pays well (relatively, of course, I still make more than he does). Tri's would easily eat away his salary. Grad students, in most other areas, do not make enough money to make the schedule flexibility worth it, IMO.

I'm a teacher and it is a pretty good gig for this, minus the pay part.  I have good hours to where I am off by 3:30 most days.  With summers off, I can train as much as I want for end of summer/fall races.
