Subject: Tip: Choosing Your Primary Care Physician

Particularly for those of us new to endurance training, let me kindly recommend that you seek out a primary care physician that is known for treating endurance athletes and, hopefully, is an endurance athlete as well.  It seems there have been more than a few discussions recently that involve doctor's advice that may be more conservative than is necessary.  Possibly not necessary, but I am more comfortable discussing my health with someone that shares an active lifestyle.

Personally, I got lucky.  My PCP is an athlete who prompted me to get it in gear.  Just recently, I was sick before a race and she specifically choose one course of treatment over another in light of my upcoming race.  Thank you.

I've lucked out as well.  While my PCP isn't known for treating endurance athletes my wife works at a chiropractor's office where one of the docs is a marathon coach and the other is a triathlete coach.  They've helped me out a lot as I've started down this road.

Oh GOD yes. The PA I saw last year for a relatively-minor-but-still-needed-checking-out saddle sore told me to stay off the bike completely for two weeks during the peak of Ironman training. He went on about how he had planned to do a marathon but pulled out when he had some collapsed discs in his back and it's not too big a deal to pull out of Ironman. For a minor saddle sore.

I was not impressed, nor did I follow his advice.

Mine is an avid cyclist he treats me with endurance/races/training in mind. And he's so thorough and explains everything so well in fact seeing him today!

Holy wow.  I cried for a day when I bike crashed a week before a HIM and had to forgo it, and that was just a relatively cheap local race.  I can't imagine the look on your face when he said that!

I chose mine based on her bio (athletic background, in adult competitive leagues, etc.) and photo online. Yes I judged based on appearance. I refuse to go to an obese physician.

Her (obese) nurse has practically rolled her eyes at me more than once when I've come in for running-related injuries... "so you just decided to up and run 20 miles one day and got hurt?"... LOL nurse, no do you want to see my 20-week training plan?

Yeah, my wife met my PCP at the pool one day.  My wife is convinced she now knows the real reason I speak so highly of her.

I just love my doc to death.  She's seen me through 150 lbs of weight loss and claims she would take photos of me to her Weight Watchers meetings if it didn't violate HIPPA regulations.  She also put me under strict orders to take in the medal I got for finishing a century ride.  I don't particularly care that she's never raced - it's that she listens to me, makes great suggestions, offers options, and does fist pumps when she hears my asthma is no longer limiting my activities.

That being said, I've got a brother who is an avid bike racer, like 24 Hours of Moab level.  He makes suggestions and my doctor is happy to hear about second opinions.

If my doc was a 10x Ironman finisher, I'd still fire her if she didn't care and/or didn't listen to my health concerns.

I have had the same PCP for 17 years and only seen him once so I don't know how much good that would do.  I haven't been to the doctor for about 7 years but when I have gone in the past I always saw a PA.

I asked my OB/ GYN who she used and I love the PA she recommended. Being located in Boulder they are pretty used to saddle sores and active lifestyles. I like that if I give a good description when I book my PA will have reasearched a little if it's weird. (she quoted recent studies she had read in choosing drugs for me when I was nursing.)

I changed docs last year, as the previous 70-year-old, waiting-3-hours-during-an-appointment, incredibly-rude male doctor just had to go.  I chose a young female doctor, who had excellent online local reviews, that is just a very short cycle ride from my house, and I so lucked out.  She runs half marathons, has done one sprint triathlon, is trying to get the surgery to install some bicycle racks (I have to leave my bike with the receptionists as I there is nowhere to chain it up outside), understands why I love triathlon and training, has a wicked sense of humour, and is incredibly easy to talk to.  My doc and the practice she is in, plus a specialist, are currently treating me for disseminated Valley Fever that's given me meningitis, arthritis, and a host of other problems  They all seem to give a damn, unlike so many other doctors I've had, and are trying hard to get me well and back to working full time, and more importantly back to triathlon training full time.  Valley Fever - the nasty fungus that the Arizona Tourist Board DOESN'T mention - bleah!

I love my family doctor.  I am preggo right now, at my last appointment I asked her about flying while pregnant.  She asked me if I had compression socks and suggested that I wear them for the flight.  I bet I'm her only patient under the age of 70 with compression socks

So she doesn't see any triathletes?

the PA I was seeing was a regular runner and very supportive and easy to work with.  He left for a new gig and when I went to see his replacement about my PF he had the audacity to tell me that I had no business running at my size (about 255 at the time)Surprised

needless to say I'm shoppng for a new place for routine care.

This might be a stupid question but I'm looking for a new doctor and I was wondering how you would find out if they are athletes or specialize in athletes?  My last doctor's office is extremely non customer friendly so I'm looking.

I never actually see the doc-I see the nurse practitioner. However, the whole practice is based on holistic medicine. My NP is a marathon runner (Boston-level), she follows a paleo diet, and is super well-versed in diet, supplements, and all things related to endurance sports. I LOVE her.

I chose mine like this:

Look on insurance website

See who is in their "network"

Pick one nearby

Luckily I got a good one who also has a sports medicine background.  One of the docs in the practice, does medical support for the Leadville races.  I saw her when I had a problem with my foot.  We had just moved here and didn't know anyone to ask.

Most in my area have bios listed on their web sites - usually they will list specialties or at the very least interests which might give you a clue if they are athletic-minded.

I agree, and my patients , especially one that was new yesterday said they liked that in my bio that I was a triathlete and could relate better with me and visa versa.

However, keep in mind there are a lot of good docs out there that do not participate in endurance sports but still understand the needs of an athlete...just look at the whole picture, but if they say or do what I have just read above...run forrest run!!!

In addition to bios, ask running/riding/swimming buddies.  You could contact officers/whatever of local clubs that might be able to help.  Ask at local running/cycling shops.
