Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: No more Wrestling in the Olympics So it looks like the IOC is dropping wrestling. I wonder if the IOC shouldn't have rebranded it a bit in light of the popularity of Ultimate Fighting. Or maybe that's what they should do, replace Olympic Wrestling with MMA? Just seems odd to drop the oldest sport in the Olympic Games. |

Just seems odd to drop the oldest sport in the Olympic Games. They'll probably replace it with skateboarding or something "hip" like that. I figure in another handful of Olympics it will be all X Games type sports for ratings. |

Well the US wanted it. Afterall, we have the most medals in Wrestling. It's probably the French who didn't want to keep losing to us. Women's wrestling was in this last olympics. I think it's a case of not modifying the settings to make it more popular. UFC isn't better than boxing. It's just that the UFC guys do a better job of making it cool. Wrestling is pretty geeky. But if you hype it up a bit, maybe you get some people to watch it. |

The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020." OK you're out, but you can reapply? I sort of like the discussion that Olympic sports should be the ones that the Gold medal is the pinnacle of the sport.

Not to mention ping pong, and badminton. I'm not sure I understand the inclusion of professional basketball and tennis players in the Olympics either, I thought it was supposed to be for amateurs. |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: No more Wrestling in the Olympics That's too bad. It is one of those fundamental "me vs. you" sports that are so much more fun to watch than sports that require a panel of judges and a mathematics degree to figure out who won. The list of sports that might replace it are: baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. Wrestling can apply for reinstatement and be reconsidered alongside these other sports as well. One thing that I think really hurts wrestling is the fact that it’s male-only. It seems as though over the years, the IOC has preferred sports that both men and women compete in. There are very few sports left in the Olympics that are reserved for one gender only. (Wushu, from what I gather, refers to Chinese martial arts comprising competition in both "forms" and sparring. I would argue that we already have Judo and TaiKwonDo, so I don't see why we need a third Asian martial art in the Olympics, but that's probably just me being an ugly American.) |

Women's wrestling was in the last olympics I believe. Yep. It was in the London Olympics. Women have been getting into the sport a lot in the last few years.

Not to mention ping pong, and badminton. I'm not sure I understand the inclusion of professional basketball and tennis players in the Olympics either, I thought it was supposed to be for amateurs. Women's softball was taken out, depending on whose story you believe, because: A) It's not played on a wide enough global scale to be competitive in enough places. IOW, the US and one or two other countries completely dominated the rest of the teams in the field to the extent that the medal contenders were a forgone conclusion before the tournament began. Or, B) The use of PED's among professional baseball players was so rampant that most of the top MLB players would refuse to play in the Olympics because they could never hope to pass the stringent IOC drug testing. Rather than have a competition from which nearly all of the top athletes in the world in the sport were absent, the IOC decided to drop baseball and with it softball, which was viewed as the female version of baseball. |

Master 2277 Lake Norman, NC | Subject: RE: No more Wrestling in the Olympics It's horrible! Pathetic! Stupid! The oldest and IMHO, one of the best sports... Money. Plain and simple. Some moron made a decision based on TV viewership, advertising, and money. Another example of what's wrong with the world... Equestrian dressage, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, badminton (totally corrupt), and modern pentathlon (pistol shooting, épée fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, show jumping, and a 3km cross-country run... seriously... 3k!!!!) are in... ... and wrestling is out. WTF?!!!!!

Master 2010 Falls Church, VA | Subject: RE: No more Wrestling in the Olympics To me it is kinda sad. Just about the only time you get to see wrestling is in the Olympics and a gold medal truly is the pinnacle for these guys. It is not like they are going pro and making piles of money, unless the go MMA, etc. |

Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: RE: No more Wrestling in the Olympics That decision really confuses me. Wrestling - I mean really, wrestling. I do not come from a big wrestling state but even I participated in it in High School and some in College. I watched it in the Olympics and who can remember the big viewship draws for the matches in Beijing? It is also one of the great one on one sports out there. No gear inequality just one person against another person on the mat, may the best man win. If you train hard and smart you get ahead. Equal playing field even down to the weight (mostly). I hope they re-apply and are re-accepted. |

Member 354 | Subject: RE: No more Wrestling in the Olympics I find this surprising as well, given its history in the Games. Maybe they want to replace it w/ Pankration, which is sort of like what the original wrestling was in the ancient Olympics. Selfishly, I'm just glad they didn't axe Modern Pentathlon (yet). That one is my favorite and it seems like it's always on the short list for being taken out of the Olympics. |

Didn't the women's triathlon end with nobody sure who won until the officals told them? I get your point though. |

Veteran 671 Harrison, Oh | Subject: RE: No more Wrestling in the Olympics I'm SO sad about this. My son is a wrestler. Started in 7th grade and is now wrestling his final year in college (1 year at DI, 3 years at DII). Wrestling has been a big part of his/our lives. It is a tough sport that has shaped him from a timid young boy into a responsible young man. He had/has Olympic potential (spent a week at the OTC in Colorado Springs a few years back, wrestled on a world team in China) but wanted to graduate college and then see where things might lead. I understand that this is NOT a final decision, but am saddened by the fact that a sport with such a rich history as wrestling, is even mentioned as possibly being removed from our great Olympic games. I still receive emails from the wrestling coordinator at the OTC and plan to stay connected to the latest news on this story. I will mention it wherever I can ~ PLEASE don't remove wrestling from the Olympics, it means SO much to SO many. |
