I have a drill press made by my grandfather of scrap. It includes the lower unit from a 1930's outboard motor.  He built it in the early 1940's.  It still runs.  It has a lot of gear reduction using multiple belts and this outboard motor part so he could drill steel at low speed.  During the war, high speed tool steel was not available. He needed to be able to run conventional bits at very low RPM, like 10-20 RPM.  The rest of the thing is just a marvel of re-purposed stuff. He was a machinist. I wish I had known him longer.  I was 3 when he died.

This is awesome, and this is why we need to listen to and learn from our elders! I cannot do half of the stuff that my Grandfathers could.

 

For me as a weird item....Definitely has to be my Lobster Trap....which actually my grandfather got for me! I want to make it into a Coffee table some day!

A piece of the hull from a Ben Franklin class submarine cut into the shape of Texas.  I'm one of the original crew members that converted it from a sub to a nuclear training facility.

I am an orthopedist so its all ortho related

-An intramedullary nail I removed from a pt
-A BLACK Agee wrist jack...........which they don't make anymore.  It is an external fixation device for wrist fractures.  They used to be black but a pt had one on and went into a conveince store and the clerk thought it was a gun and shot and killed the poor slob who's only crime was to break his own wrist.  They are white now

These are actually my dads stuff..but old pictures dating back to the 1800s of his family. A saber from the Civil War. He also spent some time in Alaska when he was getting his doctorate so had some cool fossils and artifacts..A sharks tooth, a wooly mamoth's jaw bone.

Myself I have squat that anyone would think is cool.

Things that I dont own that are related to me..grave stones/sites from the 1600-1700s of my dads family in a cemetary in Porthmouth NH. Very cool to go visit them.

For me I think it would be my gold bearing core drill samples, not something most people have laying around. the large gold pieces imbeded in the quartz viens are quite outstanding, just too bad it wasn't my claim.
