Went to an open house at a local tri store and was overwhelmed with all the different brands/models of bikes.  Once you determined your price range how did you decide which brand/model of tri bike to go with?

I'll admit.....I did it backwards and bought one before I got a fit.  I just built up a roady and had no intentions of buying, then went into a bike shop and saw it sitting there.  A left over Argon 18 E-80 built up with mostly ultegra.  Wife said "ok, you can get it, Happy Birthday".  I never do an impulse purchase of that magnitude but it was calling me.  LOL!

Now, if you are at a place that has tons of bikes you can ride I would do that AFTER you get a it and know which bikes would be the best fit for you.

I selected both of mine on looks alone. I had my budget and went for the prettiest

My newest(of 4) bikes is a Felt DA. I had been sniffing for a new TT bike for a while, had no intentention of buying that day and was simply enjoying the eye candy at the LBS but when I came by her I simply knew she was mine. No question. She fits me like a fine kid skin glove.

I'm rogue in that I don't buy in to the whole 'get fit and they will tell you what will work' thing.

Cervelo was running a huge promotion, I test rode the P2, it fit well, and I bought it!

Ditto. I had a Cervelo R3 road bike, and I knew I'd fit on a P2 from having tried it. So... $1800 instead of $2800 can't be beat. Plus it's red and black like my other bike, so all my accessories and clothing already matched

I researched different brands' stack/reach parameters based on information on ST, and narrowed it down to a few brands. I'll admit that I was attracted to Cervelo and Felt, and knew that one of the best fitters in the area was at a store that dealt in these bikes. I got a TT fit, and was matched to a P2 or P3. I chose the P2 because I figured that I couldn't justify the additional cost of the P3 while I was giving away minutes due to my woeful swimming.

Agree, at least in my experience.

Bought my Felt S32, which was a screaming deal because it was a 2 yr old model just laying around.  They only had 2 Tri bikes in the shop as well so really hard to compare sizes, geometry, etc.  Also, I did next to 0 research.

I did my test rides with a cast on my left arm because of a recent mtn bike crash.  So my first time on a road bike, let alone a Tri bike with aerobars, was in a cast. The bike seemed to "Fit" just right.  After 6 years, that is still my one and only road/Tri bike and I have no intentions of upgrading anytime in the near future nor getting a professional "fit".   Maybe I was just lucky and this would have been the bike I would have naturally settled on if I did do comparisons + maybe the Bike shop guy was really good at doing my initial 20 min fit?

I knew I wanted Shimano 105's and higher. Found several then went with the one one that was in my price point and looked the best. I still lover her as much as I did when I brought her home.

After b@st@rdising a feew road bikes (the last one being a Softride), I finally had my position dialed, but hated the bike (for tri -- still have it as a roadie). So I searched high and low to find a bike that allowed that position and had good weight balance. Took along time, but eventually found one with a long-enough front center. Handles much better.

So... My choice was completely fit- and geometry-based.

My LBS (Wheelworks, Davis) does a really detailed fit that takes the better part of a day including being fit to multiple bikes and riding each for 5-10 mi. After riding 4 different bikes it was very close between two and I ended up going with my preferred brand at that point.

Based upon my stack and reach numbers from a previous fit and not having a lot of money I decided that a used Giant Trinity would work well for me.  After checking the BT classifieds, ebay and Craigslist for about 9 months I finally found one that I wanted.  It just arrived yesterday  and after a quick shakedown ride I feel like I made a good choice.  I'm just going to change the stem and replace the rear derailleur cable.

I looked at the Kona bike count and saw that Cervelo dominates it year after year:

http://lavamagazine.com/features/the-2012-kona-bike-count/#axzz2Nqeoope4

So when my LBS was doing a great deal on last year's Cervelo P3, I snapped it up and have been very happy (note: the P3 gets a new color scheme every year but the bike itself has barely changed since 2006)

You really can't go wrong with Cervelo.

I already had a Cervelo Soloist that I was racing on so when I was able to pick up a new P2 frame for $1000 at a time when the frame MSRP was double that I jumped on it... the price dropped a huge chunk the following year but I built mine up on SRAM for another $600. I've since swapped a few of my original component choices and will be running Force/Ultegra (cranks) this year.

Ebay.

I knew the models/brands I was interested in, then I just waited for a killer deal.  I've bought two brand new bikes--last year's models--at deep discount (40% off) in December.  But I've bid on a few on Ebay as well.

knew my road bike size, saw my bike on craigslist, tested the bike, got semi fitted and decided that the bike would work for me when properly fitted and the price was right since the guy was dumping his equipment and I had been watching him drop his price over the course of 4 months. got mine for 1550 and brand new all the equipment he gave me was worth between 3200-3500.

I knew that a Look 596 would fit me well, so I spent months looking for a good, used frame set. So yes, fit first, bike second.

Had a Felt S22 first and I got some good races out of it and was ready for a different bike.  I wanted something that was different than the norm so I found a nice Pinarello, got fitted, and now have upgraded some parts for this year's races.  I'm excited!  I really like my new bike and was amazed (at least for me) at some of my bike splits last year during races - although, to be honest, I did work on the engine quite a bit :D

I went to the LBS leaning toward the QR Seduza, got my first fitting and the bikes that would work best for me was the QR, Felt B12 & KestrEl 4000. took all three out for about a 3 mile ride and the Felt was the hands down best ride. So I got the Felt.

I went by price, but it was the beginning of the off season, so I still made sure it fit.

Fit/positioning should trump any "deal" you get.  Beyond body dimensions, joint/muscular mobility is a factor as well, and a good fitter should see that.

Looks certainly helped, and I tend to be a rebel when it comes to brands.  I'd rather be out there on a more obscure bike, than going with the crowd.

I went to the LBS which is a Trek shop.  Thinking I didn't want to spend over$2k for an entry level tri-bike I went to look at road bikes.  I just happened to walk into a model year end close out on tri-bikes and I scored a tri-bike for $935.  About $300 less than a good road bike.
