Subject: What bike shoes do you train in?

Hi all... So I have tri bike shoes already, roughyl 3 years old and a bit worn down. I do not own a road specific shoe and have trained the past 3 years with just the tri shoes. I am looking to grab a new pair of bike shoes and was considering just getting a road specific shoe to train in and use 80% of the time this year. Then use my current tri shoes for races and tune up training sessions.

This leads me to my question. What does everyone train in? Tri and road shoes? Thoughts?

This will only be my third season, but I train and race in the same shoes.  I have Bontrager Hilo RXL's from 2011 that still work great.  I never wear socks in them (training or race), so I'll probably get some new liners in them this year.

I train and race in tri shoes. I do use the older pair on the trainer, mostly just out of laziness.  I much prefer the freedom of wearing tri shoes (bare feet, only one flap).

I wear my mountain bike shoes with my other bikes, but the racing bike gets the tri shoes only.   They do have different pedals.

Road shoes (Sidi) when on my road bike, tri shoes (Louis Garneau) on my tri bike.

I have Sidi Lazers that I use for all road riding and training, and some T-1's that I wear for tri's (when it's warm enough). I really don't get why ALL tri shoes have to be MEGA-vented... 8am in the Pac NW certainly isn't all that warm.

Train and race with road shoes.  All the tri shoes that I have tried are too vented for my liking.  The minimal additional time in transition hasn't yet impacted my MOP (at best) status.

I train and race in Specialized Skunk Works Trivents.

I didn't want to spend so much for tri shoes and I prefer black colored shoes;  but the Skunk Works fit me perfectly and here in Miami the openess (coolness) of the SW is perfect for me.  These are the first bike shoes I could ride 50+ miles with no socks. My GF says the red shoes makes me look fast, so how could I so no?

I have an old pair of Carnac tri shoes that I do my off-season trainer work with.  For the summer I have a pair of Sidi's.  I switch out so that I don't kill my Sidi's, they are pretty spendy and awesomely comfy.

Thanks all.... I am completely torn by this for some reason. I did my first tri in 2009 and purchased some LG Ergo Airs or something like that. from that point forward, I wore them for everything on the bike. So i certainly got my moneys worth out of them, but they are weathered to say the least. I unfortuantly have not raced in 2 years due to some life events, but have continued to ride. I am debating on just keeping them for for races and getting road specific or simply retiring them for another tri shoe. I am jumping back into a a few races this year again...

I use some diadora shoes I got from performance for $30. Haven't found any reason to use anything else yet.

I bagged my road shoes 4 or 5 years ago, and have used tri shoes exclusively ever since.  Even on spin bikes.

stopped using my road shoes this year.  use only my Giro Mele Tri shoes now.

they fit better so i didn't see why not to use them exclusively.

I use different pedal system on my tri bike that I do on my road bike. I do most of my training on my road bike (about 65-70%) so most of my training will be in my Sidi (speedplay sole), the rest will be in my LG (Look sole).

I train and race in my tri shoes: shimano tr60. Pretty comfortable for wider feet. Just out of curiosity, what will be the benefit of training with road shoes and racing with tri shoes vs do everything with te same shoe?

Road shoes are usually a little more comfortable, so for long rides, that could be a benefit. Personally, I see very little difference in comfort, but I do have two different pedal systems (my tri shoes has a Look sole because the bike is a Look with the Zed crank, hence Look pedals)

I train and race in the same shoes: Specialized Trivents.

The only downside I have encountered is during winter riding - the Trivents are pretty breezy and it's harder to keep my feet warm.

I use my SIDI T2 with toe covers quite a bit and they still work OK in races.

When I purchased my first pair of shoes this passed fall the sales person said that road bike shoes offer greater stability over the Tri shoes. As it happened, non of the road bike shoes fit my feet correctly so I bought a pair of Shimano Tri shoes (forget which model). I have a short foot with a narrow ankle but fat toe box.

I would just stick with what is comfortable and not worry about it.

I train in LG Carbon X-Lites and race in the LG Tri-lites.  The X-lites are way more comfortable for my foot especially on the top of my foot.  The Tri-lites are much easier to get in and out of.

I now train and race in LG Tri-Lite carbon sole.   I was having problems with my knees and after a lot of time trying to figure out what was causing the issue it turned out it was the stiffness of the sole of my shoes.   Switched from other LG tri shoe to the carbon sole and a lot stiffer and problem went away almost overnight.

I initially had become caught up into the weight of the shoes and purchased something light and inexpensive without considering the consequences.  Will not make that mistake again.
