Half pint/scottie - I recall your struggling much with Jordan lake 200-300 meter swimming '09 and your fear re: OW lake swimming.

Let's try to keep reality in check my tri friends.

This tri stuff is not so hard. Swimming, is the biggest trouble for folks to overcome. running and using bicycle for transport - not such a new thing.

Eppie, don't single out halfpint.  I've been at White Lake when it's glassy smooth, and I could read the labels on the cans on the bottom.  I've also been there when I could not see the bottom and there were whitecaps breaking on a 1-mile wide lake with 2-3 foot swells.  In a sprint.  I am not a strong swimmer, and I admit I get weirded out with the simplest things, but the only thing predictable about White Lake is that it is unpredictable.  It is the bermuda triangle of NC.

Ain't that the truth!!!

Guys. Just want to say we hear you and all your comments. WL is very unpredictable and @japarker sometimes we just scratch our head at what gets thrown at us. Bermuda Triangle. Now that is funny.

However, there has been some awesome swim in the past years at WL. 2011 from memory was smooth as glass, but....... the fog rolled in. 2010 was the first time I raced WL and it was smooth then, but the heat.

We will revisit our wording and marketing, but you cannot discount the fact, that WL is very special for the first weeks in April and May for a lot of people because of the unpredictability. However, the roads are 200% better and those who ran the half, the weather could not of been any better for a half marathon.

Thanks everyone of you for racing WL and we will be back next year with the improvements we can control. Weather is just beyond our control.

Andrew,

Thanks for joining the party!!!!  I think we are all just having a little fun with this thread.  Now that the stress is over, we can joke about our experiences!

I can say without a doubt, that White Lake is my favorite place to race!  You guys have a real gem with that venue.  Heck, I raced there 3 times in 8 days in 2011 (including the fog/cancelled swim)!!

We know you can't control the weather or the road surfaces (but please try to lobby for improvements to Hwy 53!!!).

Thanks for all you guys do!  We are very lucky to live in NC and have you guys around.  Your races are always top notch!!

See ya soon!

Alan

Thanks for posting this!  I have been checking the marina's website and -- nothing.  As a result, I have been unable to properly stress about the water temperature!

White Lake is shallow so a few hot days or cold nights/days with lots of cloud cover can really impact it quickly. That won't help your stress level any though :-)

Oh, I know.  A few well timed cool nights would help, wouldn't it? ;-

I'm doing the Oly.  I've been on run focus since my (unexpected) shoulder surgery in September with some bike and swim thrown in.  For the past mouth, they've been ramping up.  I have no expectations at all for this event, other than hopefully having a good time out there.

More importantly than water temp (for me) is air temp. The 10 day looks quite moderate (high in the 70s). No "white bake". Or did I just jinx us?

Knowing White Bake, it will be lovely (lows in the 50s, highs in the low 70s) until the day before the race. At that point it will become humid and highs will be in the 90s. Crazy place.

Hmmm.. So I wonder how often this water temp is updated:
http://www.whitelakenc.com/

Just the sprint for me.
Not to hijack.. but how are the roads there for the bike? A friend told me to wear a mouthguard or my teeth may rattle out. Is it really that bad?

I found the same thing about that website last fall when leading up to the fall races. They are not updating it at all

Last fall, the roads were good, I believe they repaved most of the bad roads. There may have been a couple sections of what I like to call "riding over broomsticks" but definitely better than years past. (Tho, I did the OLY distance, so HALF may still have too many broomsticks).

The Olympic bike does not go on Hwy 53 but for your last half mile and that has always been the really bad road in my opinion. I last did the race in 2013 so they may have made improvements on 53 but knowing the State of NC I would doubt it.
The last 20mi of the Half bike course is teeth rattling, soul destroying stuff in my mind. If I was sill doing tri's I would not do the HIM again b/c of Hwy 53

A co-worker of mine was there this weekend. He said they just laid some new blacktop around the North side of the lake?? I think he said North side. I have no idea what road or area he is talking about though, i've never been there.

But back on track.. He said kids were swimming in the lake but no idea about water temp. 70ish?

pavement on the "North side of the lake" most likely refers to White Lake Drive (maybe White Lake Road??).

The Half will not use this road.

The Olympic will use this road for miles 25-27 (approx)

The Sprint will use this road twice (miles 4-6 and miles 11-13).

White Lake Drive, the road around the lake has been repaved. As Alan said, the international bikes will be on this stretch at the end and the sprint on Sunday will do it twice. Water temps will be posted Thursday night, my guess is it will be wetsuit legal.
