Member 90 Philadelphia | Subject: IM in 12 Weeks Good morning everyone. I’m thinking of trying to complete an Ironman in mid-to-late September. I finished my first HIM in May, which was a lot of fun, but then slowed down in training for the past six weeks. While I didn’t do much triathlon training since the HIM, I did complete a few marathons and a century ride. Swimming has completely gone by the wayside, but I like swimming and I’m not as worried about that. Mostly, the bike worries me. In your opinion, if I get back into triathlon training for the next 10 to 12 weeks, would I have a reasonable chance at completing the IM distance? And oh yeah, I’ll have to discontinue training for a week in the middle of all this because I’m getting married and going on a honeymoon. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! |

Complete the distance? I don't have any race results to look at (your 1/2-IM says 43 minutes -- quite impressive ;-) -- But if you've done marathons, a 1/2-IM, are comfortable doing a century, are healthy, and get to work with a reasonable training plan (I'd urge at least 12 weeks...) I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to finish, if simply finishing is your primary goal. I'll accept that I could be wrong, since I don't have any idea what sort of time you're doing these events in. For example if you're barely making the cutoffs at your marathons, etc., it could be a lot more challenging. But I'll assume you're a MOPer. Ken |

Enjoy your wedding and your honeymoon and do an IM next year... especially if the bike worries you! Also, what IMs are still open this late in the year? (presuming you want to do an mDot race) |

Expert 1169 Charlottesville, VA | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks OK, I dug a little deeper, and it looks like your 1/2-IM was 7 hours? Still no splits or other race info.... And I didn't notice the wedding plans! So I'll further qualify my reply by saying "yeah, you might..." -- but why not wait, get some more races under your belt and then give yourself a nice buildup to the IM distance? You're probably looking at a 16-hour plus IM, based on your 1/2-IM -- that's a long time to be out there. In the end, it's your call. Ken Edited by kenail 2013-06-26 9:20 AM |

Member 90 Philadelphia | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks Thanks kenail, I appreciate it. I realize it's a lot more volume than when training for a HIM, and I really do enjoy the training. I think that time management and convincing my fiance that it's a good idea will be the hard parts! The HIM that I completed was in 7 hours. My swim and run were both MOP to slighlty better, and my bike was really bad. The bike is one sport that needs the most attention from me, and, unfortunately, is the sport that takes up the most training time! |

Expert 1169 Charlottesville, VA | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks It's been my experience, in training for my first 1/2-IM and first IM, that the most special part of the experience was the road I followed to get there. It's nice to look back, right before the race starts, and think of the time and effort you've dedicated towards putting your best effort on the line that day. Like coach John Wooden said: "Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability." It's a tougher standard, but a more rewarding one. Good luck with your future plans (and marriage!) Ken |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks Do I understand correctly that you did your first HIM in May and in the past six weeks have since done "several marathons and a century ride"? Seems a bit amazing to me. If you can do all that at paces that get you under the cutoff times, then you shouldn't have any problems completing an IM in 12 weeks, even with some time off for your wedding. Good luck, Mark |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks Sounds like a really dumb idea to me. You struggled through a HIM a few weeks back, haven't trained much and are thinking about an IM on an abbreviated schedule. Oh, and your bike is a weakness which is a key part of an IM and yu will have to skip some training for a wedding (your own!). So, yes, dumb idea. People have done "dumber" things, of course. |

Enjoy your wedding and honeymoon and make life a lot easier on yourself by putting the IM on hold. Or tell your fiance that the wedding and honeymoon is going on hold and you're going to train for an IM properly.

If the OP decides to go with this option, he has got to report back here telling us how it went.

Elite 7783 PEI, Canada | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks Could you do it? Sure, maybe. I'm with JK though, I think it's a really bad idea. Get married, enjoy the honeymoon then spend a year training so you can actually enjoy the IM journey as opposed to just possibly slogging your way through it and likely suffering quite a bit. |

Regular 585 Pueblo, Colorado | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks To quote Ben Kenobi from Star Wars "Patience, Luke!" Would you be able to do it? Most likely. Should you do it? That's a different question altogether. If you do an IM this fall, what then? I am planning to do an IM sometime in the future, but I'm content to work on building volume on the bike, becoming a stronger swimmer, and competing in a few more triathlons at the 1/2 distance this year. That way, when I do finally tackle an IM in a year or two, I will train with confidence that I've built some experience, and I can focus specifically on the IM distance. P.S.- While a wedding is important for both partners, the event itself it is often a VERY important experience for the bride and her family (particularly your future mother in law). That may not apply to your situation, but if it does, do you really want to mess with that? |

Master 2855 Kailua, Hawaii | Subject: RE: IM in 12 Weeks this must be a joke from the OP. a "few marathons and a century ride" after the HIM in May.....hmmmm uh it's still June. as for the curve ball of getting married...well if you want to break it off, that's a sure way, by training for an IM ! ;-) |
