Pre-race routine:

Hubby and I stayed overnight in Cincinnati Saturday night, so we stayed up fairly late checking out the area. Woke up in time to grab a banana and sipped on gatorade on way to race.
Event warmup:

Did not warm up, other than an unscheduled 400 yard run to the car and a 30 second dip in pool.
Swim
  • 09m 7s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

Less than stellar swim. The first half was just a little congested, so I couldn't find any rhythm. Second half someone passed me and I was able to draft. Time includes run to transition.
What would you do differently?:

I need more pool time!
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Quick transition. Didn't help that my hubby (the guys raced later) was heckling me and yelling things like, "What are you doing- making a sandwich?"
What would you do differently?:

2nd fastest transition, good for me
Bike
  • 32m 7s
  • 20 kms
  • 36.89 km/hr
Comments:

Felt great on the bike and did a ton of passing, which is always nice. Splits were near my time trial pace. The more I ride the Ridley the more I love it on race days. Happy with the 2nd fastest bike of day, considering the girl that beat me beat all the guys, too
What would you do differently?:

Waited a little long to come out of shoes- get prepared a bit earlier!
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

A little slower here since I grabbed a quick drink
Run
  • 21m 24s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 16s  min/km
Comments:

Felt fantastic during the run. All my speedwork is starting to pay off. Really felt I could have maintained that pace for a 10K. Hoping to concentrate on running this fall.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I forget that my watch is waterproof so I could save 10 seconds or so putting it on beforehand. May start banding sunglasses to bike so I can put them on while riding.

Event comments:

Volunteers and organization and finish area were top notch, as well as transition area. Course was a bit tricky and my hubby and a few other guys missed a turn on bike that added on 1.5 extra miles. Run course was wonderful and marked with arrows. The only thing that could improve is having an award ceremony.

And another stellar race, getting better and better.... I don't know why your run and bike paces came out in km/h??  Strange....  And no award ceremony??  did you get 2nd place OA, or 1st AG?

Great job on placing 2nd.  It was great to meet you and Damien.  Best wishes on your travels, and I hope we get to see each other again at a race somewhere.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
