My suggestion would be to find a place that rents them and try a couple models out.  Talking with the rental shop would also be a good way to learn more about various brands of boards.

totally agree with MOlsen - find a place that will let you try some different ones out and go from there - I would also recommend having a rough price you are willing to pay in your mind, so that when you go to buy, you can say, this is the price range I am looking at

I just got 2 for Father's Day (thanks honey!) which we have at our cabin, which is on a nice, usually calm, smaller lake. We tried them on vacation a few times and rented locally and at the cabin and are just recreational users, so I could never tell much the difference between the boards. I think just about any beginner/intermediate board will work well for you. The one type I steered away from was the inflatable models, as those seemed more likely to fail or not work well to me. I have looked for used boards many times, but there just aren't many in our MN market yet so prices are not much different than new. New starter type boards all seem to be around 800 - 1000 or so. My wife found an online deal and had them shipped right to our house - Tava brand. They seem fine and the company has been good to work with. Make sure you get one sized correctly for the weight of likely riders and make sure the type of board matches the type of supping you will be doing. Calm lake and surf might be 2 very different types of boards, or maybe they make some that will do fine in both? Local source is alwasy a good idea too - kinda like LBS.

The whole family had a great time using ours over the 4th. We like having two as it is more fun to go out with a partner.

Recently bought two Bic brand boards...one 10.6 and one 11.6 Ace-Tecs. I love them. Excellent core work out, you can lay down and paddle with your arms which is good cross training for swimming IMO and I use my garmin 910 to track paddle boarding mileage. The Bics are extremely durable so,I don't mind letting friends use the board.
