Sunny
Total Time = 1h 00m 24s
Overall Rank = 5/325
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/22
Pre-race routine:

Stayed with Karen and Mike. Had Vic's on Fri night for dinner and then after a decent night's sleep we got up and on the road by 4:50am. Part of the reason we do this race every year is the convenience of it being 2 miles away. Awesome!

Set up transition area (no rack markings so you could rack wherever), and then did the whole wetsuit, bathroom, etc. It was cool to have Karen racing with us this year and another teammate Matt there. I went for ~1/4 mi run to check out a few course changes (we didn't come down the whole way on the other side of the lake and there was no out and back toward Ocean Grove).
Swim
  • 09m 53s
  • 587 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. We had a late start, but I lined up well and swam pretty hard. I was surprised by the size of the waves/chop, but I felt good. We made the turn for shore and it seemed like forever. I thought we were in a riptide, but then the waves started picking us up and flinging us to shore.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Slowwwww. I am getting good at jumping on bike but putting socks on etc. is not great. Lost 20-45 seconds to rest of top 5
Bike
  • 31m 3s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.94 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode about as hard as I could. Stayed with a guy who passed me early on for as long as I could keep him in sight, but he eventually got away. No one passed me until the final straight away when 2 more came by. I passed them in t2 though.
What would you do differently?:

? That's all I got. Firs ttime ever hitting 23mph I believe.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

Made up 8-12 seconds of the time I lost in t1. Excellent and close to fastest in the race.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 17m 50s
  • 3 miles
  • 05m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I passed a few in t2, but still had several others to chase down. Passed one at mile 1 and then another few on the boardwalk. Last pass was with about a mile left and had 4th place in my sights but ran out of boards...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Ran ~1 mi to cheer on Karen and K. Hung out for awards and then went for a run home of ~4 miles

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Event comments:

Great local race. A bit disorganized, but good course, great post race food and awards.

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.
