Subject: Kettlebells and 12 year old girls
I was going to buy some kettlebells for my daughter. I wanted to get here started using them and thought I would ask here. I know there are a few people on her that use them on a regular basis. So questions to start are, what size should I get? Are there one brans over another or one brand to avoid? What is a good resource for workouts for her? What are the prices like, I have seen the 15 pound ones in a local chain sporting goods store for $36,is this normal or high?

I am looking for any input.
Joe

do you have like a TJ Maxx or anything like that near you? I ask because sometimes if you look in their fitness section you can pick up some cheap lighter weight ones - I think I have like a 8lb that I got for about $6 - I would shop around

I would say that you probably want a small range or them, so that she can vary depending on what she is doing - i.e. kettlebell swing, I can do more weight but when I do other stuff, I go for lighter weight

you could also check craigslist and see if ppl are selling anything cheap

Bought mine from here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/shops/storefront/index.html?ie=UTF8&market...

Totally reasonable price-wise, delivery was quick, and everything was exactly what i ordered.

I'd get the 4kg (8.8lbs) to start.

I use the 8kg for one arm stuff, and the 12kg or 18kg for two arm stuff and squats.

I agree with Meh ...I've been using kettlebells for 1.5 years and use heavier weight. I still bang myself up. I also see adults struggle in class with 13-22lb bells until they get the hang of it. There is a lot you can do with the bells some moves requiring technique and most importantly good form so you don't hurt yourself. For a 12 year old I'd go light at first and make sure she's using them properly.

Thanks, I was hoping you and Comet would chime in. I will get here light ones ,I just used the 15 pounder as a price reference. Any suggestions on what she should start with for movements?
Joe

See if there's a Kettlebell 101 class or something similar in your area. She needs to learn proper form, especially since her body is still developing.

I agree with what everyone posted.

1. go with lighter weight. She will progress quickly, but there's no rush to go heavier.

2. find an intro KB class or pay for a 1-on-1. One of my gyms had a KB class each week and non-members could pay a drop in. It was really fun.

3. Prices: you can get the sub-12lb ones almost anywhere. TJ Maxx and Target put them on sale often. WalMart and Dicks/Sports Authority does too. $36 seems about right, but I'm sure you can find a little cheaper. I found some for $20 and $25 at Target once. I'll browse around for some good prices on heavier ones and post them later.

Where do you live? I can help you search (and I've lived all over) or I might know some gyms near you.

So, I'm not quite sure what Kettleballs are but I'm questioning if they'd be appropriate for 12 year old girls.  Boys maybe, but not girls.  ;-)

I was thinking the Kettlebells would be easier to swing around than the 12 year old girls.

My 7 year old daughter has an 8 pound KB and my 4 year old has a 4 pounder. No, they aren't doing 20 minute workouts but when I'm teaching my class they are in the back of the room setting up their own circuits and swinging kb's.

I think they are a great tool and kids benefit from the spacial awareness and body control more than the strength or anaerobic conditioning.

If I recall you are on the west side? I am over between Lapeer and Flint. I would not take my daughter to Flint for a class, you know anyone close to Lapeer?
