Subject: to swim or not to swim
I'm on the final two weeks of my training before my FIRST TRI reverse (5k run, 10 mi bike, 400m POOL swim). I'm 48 female, never competed in sports.

Our one and only local lap pool is close from today up to 3 months. Yikes!. There's a private backyard pool (15 yards) available. The next option is a pool in a military base but I need to find somebody to sponsor me.

I've been swimming constantly. I'm slow but I don't think I will be last ( I looked at race report from last year). Last week I've been doing sets of 500m to 1500m everyday (also for the last 3 months , I faithfully did swim training). Should I just stop swimming or swim on a tiny pool? Should I just focus on running and biking, resting ?

This is bugging me right now.

Thanks for your input.

My backyard pool is 10 yards long and I do up to 1500 yd swims in it.  Not ideal but I prefer the convenience,  just don't push off!

Keep swimming.  You will finish the swim whether or not you swim over the next 2 weeks but you will lose some fitness and feel for the water if you go that long without swiming.  Use the private pool...sounds like it's more convenient.

Swim if you want to, but I wouldn't sweat it if you don't.   Two weeks isn't enough time to really lose anything significant in your scenario, I don't think.

That's huge for a backyard pool. If you figure it's 60% of a 25 yard lap pool, it's not terrible if you just don't push off.

Could you share with me your swim workouts when you swim in your 10yard backyard pool?

Two options.

One: If the pool isn't too narrow, swim the perimeter.  The pool that is near me that I have been using is about 15 yards too.  I swim in an oval...I swim the turns...I don't swim down the middle then stop turn and push off, I keep going.  It's a little awkward at first to swim a turn, but I find it's a good muscle movement while keeping your swim continuous.

Or two:  Get a big bungee cord and tie it to the ladder and the other end to a waist harness or your foot.  Turn it into and 'endless' pool.  I saw a guy doing this very thing a few weeks ago trying to get back into shape for a surfing trip.

I prefer option one as I hate treadmill-type devices...I'm not a hamster...I need stuff whizz'in by me.

You can do it.  It's not going to be a problem, you just have to improvise a little.

Let us know how the race goes!

I tried this in the beginning when we installed our pool.  Hated it and took it back to the store.

You have me confused with a swimmer!  I just swim, some days after a WU of X its 100*X at T-pace -10s, other days its 200*x at T-pace -5s other days it just a continuous swim distance.

Thank you all for your input.

I'm with you with using bands to simulate endless pool. Since I run outside all the time, I hate treadmills now ( I hope I don't offend any one). Per your advice, I will swim around the perimeter.

The doctor says not to run again. Ever. Needless to say, I’m not taking this very well. Can I recover from this? Where should I go from here?

I usually have at least one workout per day, sometimes two or three, but I spend about all in-between time eating. I am not gaining weight, but I am not losing weight either. Should I be concerned?

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
