Pre-race routine:

I have been mostly cycling since USAT Nationals. I signed up for this race as an experiment to see how well my running fitness was maintained through all the riding I've done lately. If I do an occasional tri this year, my longest run would be a 10k, so this race was a good opportunity to see where my run currently is.

I did throw in a couple of runs the last few weeks to help aid with getting ready for hard efforts.

Event warmup:

I jogged for a little bit, but it was very cold. On a normal day I would have considered my warmup inadequate, but I made an exception to stay as warm as possible before the race.
Run
  • 43m 40s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 06m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

My first mile was a bit hot at 6:21, but I settled after that and hovered around my target 6:35 pace. It held overall until about mile 3. I figured that with very little running I would start to hurt after the first 5k. I especially thought this would be the case with the majority of the elevation occurring between miles 3 and 5. After that I was able to rally and get the pace back down.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously running more would help, but as a focused cyclist this year that isn't going to happen. At least I know I have the overall fitness to put out a respectable run when needed.
Post race
Warm down:

Very cold and tired. I haven't been that happy to eat Little Ceasar's in a while.

Event comments:

The Blues Marathon is a great race, and I think this distance is a good way to let runners not quite ready for a full or half to experience the environment of a bigger race before making the leap.

Great job Matt! I agree, the race distance is a real nice in-between distance for those that are just dipping a toe into the distance racing pool.
