Hello, BTers. My name is Mike and this will be my first Tri in 18 years (and 40 lbs). I did 11 sprint and Oly tris back then in '87-'88. Been trying for the past couple of years getting back into the sport. Looking forward to it. Trying to start out slow but plan on increasing intensity rather quickly in order to prepare. Any encouragement would be welcome.

Welcome back Mike. I did my first triathlon last weekend in Peachtree City. It was not my true first as that actually occurred in 1990.  I have lost 27 lbs since January and did all my training for that race in 56 days. It was such a buzz. I am glad I took the step to get back in the sport and I am sure you will do just fine.  Have fun out there!!!

Thanks, Gary.  Glad to see and another former Tri-dog back in the hunt also.  Great job on the weight loss too.  That's one of my motives with getting back into the sport.

UNOFFICIAL BIKE COURSE REPORT:

The course appears to be more like 13 miles and this will attempt to describe miles 2 – 11.  The first two and last two miles of the ride were inside the park and that would have cost $8 and I wasn’t going to pay that.  Besides I presume that portion of the bike is relatively flat.

  • Coming out of the park at mile 2, the course is slight to moderately uphill for approximately 2 miles.
  • At mile 4, you zigzag onto Old Holiday and then immediately onto Green Rd.  Here it continues to be slightly uphill and flattens out just before you get to Buford Dam Rd @ 4.5 miles.
  • As you turn onto BDR, you have a little downhill before you encounter the first rolling hill of the course.  At 4.75 miles, Hill #1 is a moderate rolling hill.  After this, BDR is slightly downhill until you reach Shadburn Ferry Rd.
  • At mile 6.2, you will turn left onto Shadburn Ferry Rd and you will have a slight downhill before you hit Hill #2.  At 6.4 miles, hill #2 is another moderate roller that is short lived.  At the top of this hill you will flatten out and go slightly downhill to Peachtree Ind Blvd.
  • At 6.75, You will turn left onto PIB and begin a slight uphill continuous for approximately 1.5 to 2 miles.
  • Next at mile 8.5, you turn left onto Holiday Rd and have a brief downhill to prepare you for the largest hill of the course.  At mile 8.75, you will hit this large rolling hill that last for approximately ½ mile.
  • As you top that last hill @ mile 9.25, you begin a significantly downhill portion of the race that will last pretty much the rest of the race to the 11.25 mile mark.  From there I believe that the course will flatten out to the end.
I hope that this helps!

Mike,

Just an FYI. The course is not flat inside the park. There is an immediate short climb inside the gates and then a longer climb just after that. If you want to ride the course, you can park just outside the gates and ride your bike in without paying the park entry fee.

Thanks, Neal for the update on the interior portion of the bike course.  Overall, I don't think it will be that bad.

I'm #194.  The swim has been changed and will be point to point rather than out and back.  It looks like we'll walk 400 yds up the beach and swim back along a line of temporary bouys.

Good luck everyone!

Hi Everyone,

We did a "recon" this morning of the course. Couple of things to note:
The water felt fairly warm - 77 ish in comparison to the outside temperature. The lake was quite low. After the swim there's at least a 50yd uphill trek to the parking lot. We were breathing pretty hard! just walking briskly...yikes!
I wouldn't say the bike course is fast and flat, as there are several gradual hills. Right before you get to T2 at the parking lot, there's a short steep hill. The run course has some shade in some spots and overall it didn't seem hilly. The run finish will also take you back up that steep hill. Weather should be about 55 degrees start time and warming up to 60 degrees.

Hope this helps!
I'm race#554
Have a great race everyone.

results:
They did a good job with this event. For a first time event, I have no complaints. Loved the timing mat at the run turn around point. There should be a mat at the furthest point from finish on every run course.

I agree........this was a great race. GA Multisports did a great job managing such a large group.

Only one comment on the course.....did anyone notice that the bike course was actually around 13.51 miles? My first clue was when I rode past the 13 mile sign on the bike course, then my GPS confirmed the actual distance. No big deal though, since everyone went the same distance. Only imact would be on bike speed.

Thanks for posting the link to the results.....GA Multisports site isnt updated yet. Looking forward to all of the race reports.

Yes, my bike computer said 13.57. I was wanting to ask everyone the same question. Thanks for bringing it up.

Yes I saw that, too.  I was wondering why my MPH was lower on the results than it was on my computer.  That makes sense now.
