Subject: Injury Advice!
Hi all,

I came off my bike and won myself a grade 3 AC separation of the right shoulder. I did it 3 weeks out from Iron Man Italy.

Has anyone had the same injury so close to a race and did you attempt to still compete? Im currently 2 weeks post crash, still cant move my arm above my head but thinking about still attempting to race.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Honestly I guess that would be up to you and your doctor. I'm assuming your injury is such that you could still compete and not injure yourself further?

To me not being able to lift my arm above my head would tell me I shouldn't race. I have recurring shoulder problems from an old ice hockey injury. Not only does it sometimes make swimming difficult, but it can hurt on the bike. When it flares up I can't stand up and pedal at all.

My injury isn't as bad as yours. So if your doctor said you are okay to race and you can put up with the pain, I guess there is nothing wrong with it. Me personally I wouldn't chance it.

What does your doctor or PT say? I'm not sure how you can swim if you can't put your arm above your head, and I certainly wouldn't want to get knocked around in open water without being at 100%

I say this as someone who desperately want to still be able to compete at Multisport Nationals in Miami, but am currently waiting for x-ray results after turning my ankle. Sometimes as athletes we think we are capable, and maybe you could get through it. But would you be doing yourself damage, and hurting your changes of continuing to enjoy sport over your lifetime?

Be smart.....you're done for that race.  It happens.

Doc says I've no chance of getting through it (probably covering his arse) PT says I've got a 30% chance of making it through the swim, bike, run should be manageable with the right amount of pain killers.

9 months of training and a lot of expense gone into this race. Very tough call. I don think id make it round the swim within the cut off time using one arm?!

I blew my knee out 3 weeks before Lake Tahoe IM.....I lived to fight another day.  You will too.  I had done a half IM and the Marine Corps marathon in the lead up that summer before.  It was going to be a culmination of 3 years of work on that latest go-round with triathlon....I was ready to go.  Sorry for the bad luck, I know it sucks.

If I had it to do over again I would have NEVER been involved in long distance triathlon......the sprint game is more fun by far.

That is a spectacularly bad idea.  Listen to LB.  Can you defer?  I did that a few years ago for HIM Eagleman.

I had a grade two AC separation from a bike wreck(no surgery) and I personally could not have done an IM three weeks later. Nonetheless, I'm hoping you get a different answer from your doctor. Sucks to be so close and then get injured...

I did 70.3 race for my first two Triathlons.  Then I did an Olympic followed by three more 70.3 races.  I did my first Sprint Triathlon this spring.  Yes, I agree that Sprints are more fun.   I have done three Sprints this year.  I was supposed to do a 70.3 next week but waited up until 3 hours before registration closed and signed up for the Sprint instead of the 70.3.   So instead of doing one 70.3 this year it will be four Sprints.  Four Sprints is about equal to one 70.3. Right?  :-)  I might get the bug to do the long-distance triathlon.  It is definitely something I consider every year, but as long as I am enjoying what I am doing I will stick with it.  When I stop enjoying what I am doing that is when I will look at trying a new distance (or new sport).
