I'm doing my first Ironman-brand race this year and will have a lot of spectators.
I wasn't sure if the tracker app only alerts when I cross a timing mat, or if it's more like "Share my Location" on iPhone?

It updates the times when you cross a timing mat. I think it also gives estimated times, but they are just based on the timing mat interchanges.

BikerGrrl, I think you nailed how it works.

My family said they found it incredibly accurate, even though yes it's based on when you cross the timing mats. A few years ago I rented a personal GPS tracker and because it ran on cell service and the route had spotty cell service, they said the Ironman tracker app was way more accurate than the GPS. Worst case, you slow down in between mats and your cheering section is early, rather than late, seeing you.

Thank you! Very helpful.
My partner also said the projections were pretty accurate, although the pace times were wildly off. (At one point I was supposedly running a 5-minute mile.)

Be aware the "tracker" can be prone to long stalls and glitches, particularly with splits late in the race and finish times. For one of my races (where I ended up qualifying for Worlds) I didn't know for several hours that I had won my age group, because it never gave final results (nor were they posted on site). I actually found out from people on two different continents who happened to be watching my tracker when the final results came up!

In another case (my last race), for hours after the race, the tracker accurately showed all my splits EXCEPT my finish time/place. It reported I was DNF. Lots of confused e-mails and texts from friends who wondered what had happened that was so catastrophic that it caused me to drop out of a 70.3 with half a mile to go! I had had an issue with my timing chip (the strap had broken in T1, and officials had told me to complete the race with the chip in my tri suit pocket) and worried that maybe the finish line timing mat didn't read it, I'd somehow DQ'd, etc. It's crazy to read that you didn't finish a race when in fact you did and are holding your finish medal! Then I found out there were others in the same situation. They finally rectified the issue about 18 hours after the fact and I got my finish time/place.

I have no idea if this glitch affected awards or Worlds slot roll-downs. I was 10th in AG and left before that because I figured I had no chance for the roll-down. But it makes you wonder! I would tell any friends watching you not to panic if the tracker appears to stall for a long time, or not show a final result promptly after you finish.

As for the pace numbers, they are only as accurate as the reported distances between the timing mats. If those are off (they often are), then yes, it can report some pretty crazy splits. I can recall a 3:58/mile split once! I don't think so.
