You DON'T necessarily have to wear it .... there is an honor type system usually with sponsors unless you sign an agreement (which usually involves financial sponsorship, not just product support). But usually you will wear it out of courtesy and to help promote the company that assisted you.

Comet, it's not a high horse, it comes from someone who for a few years DID have to negotiate sponsorship deals with company reps. and the companies themselves for a team that I created and was captain of. It's experience, not one-upmanship. It would be the same as when I give someone advice on running or cycling. It's not something I pulled out of my azz and being elitist, it is 18 years of real-world exeperience, take it or leave it as one sees fit. But one should not presume to make a well-educated comment on it if they have never been on the other side of it. I cannot presume to tell anyone what an IM feels like as I've never done one, and so I don't.

I proudly wear my BT trisuit (and paid full price for it) because, like you, it is a community I strongly support and want to see grow in the best possible way. And assuming I get my ICF slot I'll proudly be wearing my "Team Ironman" colors at IMFL next year because I raised money to support my quest and to give something back to the community (whereas some others just used it as a way to get into the race - not that there's anything wrong with that).

I do see this as a "sponsorship" opportunity knowing how the system works. I'm not a top 5 AGer (yet) in tris and can't go on a cold call to get free stuff from a company even if I still have some connections in the bike industry. So I'll take what I can get with what's available. As I said, I'm using their product anyways.

I hope you're not on your high horse about knowing how sponsorships work. I've seen several (not for me of course) where they actually give you FREE stuff.

Fleeb for example gets TYR gear and race entries with Ironhead...for free.

Sure.  But that's because the companies involved have decided that the marketing return of their investment is worth giving some stuff away.  Fleeb gets a heck of a lot more press coverage and attention at races than your average AG athlete.

Javelin did this in a broad way their first year (free uniforms).  Now (like this Gu offer) they offer discounts for gear in return for some advertising for themselves.  It doesn't matter if it's "free" or not.   Sponsorship is simply giving something of value (product, coupons, cash, etc.) and hoping to get a return by increased marketing exposure.

I think i'm going to apply. It may be one of the only opportunities a BOPER like me will get. It says "the last guy that crosses the finish line" and I consistently beat that guy by 1 or 2 spots.

Go for it, good luck!

Assuming they reall only do take 500, it will be a good deal.

I might apply since I sometimes use Gu gels and I do buy some of the other products there though not necessarily the Gu brand.

Can anyone tell me if this opportunity is open to Canadians? Also I should build some sort of athletic resume, but I don't have one yet. Can anyone give me an example of one?

Thanks,
Jen

If you can convince the IRS that a GU "sponsorship" is sufficient evidence that you're a professional triathlete even though you have absolutely no chance in the world of ever winning a race,  then you can deduct all your triathlon travel expenses and depreciate your fan$y new bike!

Now THAT would be worth the $189 investment!

Actually, a few years ago I put my drag racing expenses and winning onto my taxes (which you could do as "hobby expenses" or something like that, I used Tax Cut and it had definitions which my habit fell into).

jeng, here is what I did when I sent it in (with a cover letter). I don't see anywhere that says it's not open to Canadians, but it would be worth an e-mail ....

yeah I think GU would turn me down with the statement "Sorry but by the time anyone would see you cross the finish line everyone would be gone."

Frankly it is better deal than people over paying for a shirt with a nike logo on it. People pay for free advertising all the time.

Well, it's not really sponsosrhip, it's selling a limited number of items for a lower price.  I guess we'd get the details with the submission, but is there a requirement to wear them to races, and as dave pointed out, they gonna enforce that or take your swag away?  doubt it

As for the logos, excuse me while I go home and remove the desoto patch from my tri shorts, rip of the swoosh on my Nike running shirt and cover up the CSC on my jersey.

Looking at it, trying to decide if I would wear the Gu belly top, probably not, but seems like it might be a good deal.  The clothes alone are worth $200 probably.

Oh stop it ...... there are tons of people on here that make mine look like crap. It's not always about how you do, it's how you present yourself!! Just like going for a job.

Don't be embarassed, include goals on yours so that you can project the desire to get better and faster. People like to see that because it means you will be out there working hard!

I second this.  You've got to present yourself well.  It's not all about speed and placement at the triathlons, but about how vocal you will be about supporting your "sponsor" and how much actual exposure they would get from you.

Well, thanks guys for the support. I have dropped my "resume" in the mail. Worse case scenario is I lost the cost of an envelope and stamp.
