Worst weather race memories? (Page 2)

I don't mind rain that much but heat....that's another story.  Hood to Coast Relay, sometime in the late 90's:  96 degrees at 5000' elevation at the start line and by the time I did my first run later, down at Sandy, OR; it was a 7 miler and the temp was 102-103 when I started.  Heard later that it got hotter after that.  Needless to say, I was NOT a happy camper but the end of that 7 miles.

Oh...and then there was IMCDA this summer.  97-98 degrees at the hottest that day with wind gusts to 20mph for a bit in the early afternoon.  Hated that. 

I did a rainy mountain bike race back in 1994. The course was mainly red clay. Everything was fine as long as it was actually raining, but when it stopped and the clay began to dry a bit, it got sticky, really sticky. I remember having to stop and scoop mud out of my chain stays so that the rear wheel could actually turn. Shifting was completely impossible because mud caked up around the cassette.

I have always said that it was really a wheelbarrow race.

Welshy, that trail run DOES look fun. I wanna be that woman whose muscles are popping out through the mud.

I'm also racing Houston, just the half, and to date am going with the optimist's forecast which says that it will still be in the 50's in the morning, before the freezing thunderstorm comes pounding into town in the afternoon.

Usually what we face in Texas is heat, heat, and more heat. For me, BOP in a tri typically means running in 90-plus degree heat (with or without humidity, depending on the part of Texas) with the sun beating down from directly overhead.  I have trained in temps as high as 106.  Running in the cold makes me faster!

Yeah, TMS was pretty fun. It was my first race in aerobars, so I was very nervous on the bike.

I had a 10K last year that was in the 40s with heavy wind and a downpour. The course was on a city running trail that had a big dip in it. Couldn't go around it, couldn't jump over it. Just had to go right through it. Probably 6 inches deep. Nice. And it was an out and back, so you got to do it twice. Bonus! To make matters worse, I wore a long sleeve cotton sweatshirt, so by the end of the race it added 20 extra pounds for me to carry.

On the flipside, Hotter n Hell was pretty dang hot last year. The closed off the Hell's Gate checkpoint 90 minute early, so we didn't even get to do the full century. When we got to the car, the temp was 113. That's hot.

Donmck and I did the Callaway Garden marathon (I did the half - it was two loops) last year.  It was raining so hard that the water was dripping off the bill of my baseball hat I was wearing.  I guess about an hour or so into the race the rain let up a little.  We were running along and Don looks down and he had poofs of soap suds on the knees of his sweatpants!  Hahaha!  I guess there was soap residue left in his pants from when he had washed them. 

Seriously though, I got the worst blisters on my feet from running in wet socks.  I am not sure what you can do to avoid this in raining weather.
