What was goofy about the swim???

I just looked at the weather at CdA online, doesn't look like it would have been overly choppy from wind....pleasant temps for riding the bike....BUT it does look like for the peeps out there running after 5pm they'll have a 10% - 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms between 5 and 8 pm.....just a 50% chance of light showers between 8 and 11.

GO BTers!

I talked to JEff (lostviking) on the phone when he was 1/2 way thrun the bike and he sais the swim was really choppy and it was windy although at that time (3:55 EST)  he said it was quieting down.  I hope he is off the bike!!!  The web site is WAY behind

GO BTers!

Apparently very chilly this AM (40's), a bit windy, choppy - race officials gave the option to do a duathlon for those worried about the conditions.

I was out watching this morning, and from my (non-IM) perspective, the swim was insane!  There were big swells and a lot of whitecaps out on the lake, and the wind was just howling at the start.  It got stronger and stronger before the start, then calmed down an hour or so after the start.   It was blowing so hard it made waves on top of the waves.   The farther out they went, the bigger the waves got.  The kayaks and canoes were dancing all over the place.  I swam it yesterday in nicer conditions, and it was still pretty crazy around the turn bouys - when I stopped to tread water and look around, the waves were coming from every direction and breaking over my head - it was actually easier to swim and try to catch a breath at the top of the swell.   The course goes straight out into the lake in a  narrow rectangle, so the athletes were right in the middle of the big water.

And COLD - the water was probably in the low 60s but with the 40's degree temps and the wind, the athletes got really cold.  Standing waiting for the start in the wind, especially if they got in the water first, would mean that they started the swim cold.  They had a hot tub outside the transition tents, but I didn't see very many people in it, and a friend who worked in the tent said that some womens' hands were shaking so bad they couldn't get their gloves on.

The last swimmer got out of the water just a minute or two after the cutoff and they let her continue!  Yay for IM!  And I guess Sister Madonna Buder (sp?) was working the tent too!

BIG BIG props to all the BT athletes, and to everyone out there today!  SO cool to see them out there!

Yeah I noticed that as well.  I heard them say something about 10-11mph wind.  And then I started laughing to myself, remembering the 15mph winds on the swim and 40mph winds on the bike at IMAZ...and started wishing we could have been as lucky! LOL  Those waves on top of waves sound insane though, we didn't see that at Arizona.  I'm sure everyone had a tough swim today.  Way to go for toughing that out!!!

Everyone's doing so great!!  There are some amazing people out there today!  This entire day has reactivated my IM drive!  I can't wait to get out there again!  GO BT!!!!

We're at about 11 hours, any updates?

I agree with c_cic (Hi Colleen!), I was there as a fan and a beginner triathlete, and the swim was ugly. I would estimate the wind to be 20 mph and was directly into the swimmers at the start. I saw several athletes swim back, unable to go on. I felt so bad for them, but the fans were so supportive cheering their efforts. There was one particular guy that I was watching he came back, regrouped and then started again. He was working so hard and going almost nowhere. He finally came back in and resigned. I hope he went on to do the du.

Congratulations to all the finishers and to those yet to finish, you are truly ironmen. I have pics of the start, but I'm sure they're too large to post, so I'll try to shrink them and post.

I watched the race for a little bit online and happened to see an All3Sports friend of mine Steve Thomas. It was awesome to see him run by the camera.
Congrats to everyone that competed.

Likewise. Just the whole.... SPIRIT of the day is awesome.

I'm in NYC but really want to stay up and watch the 17 hour finishers... don't know if I am going to make it.

Okay, here's one thing... having been watching the video all night while doing reports and stuff for work... does anyone else find the finish line music really lame? I mean, "Now that We've found love?" People, please! If they play that when I am crossing the finish line at IMLOU, well... okay, I probably wouldn't mind by that point, but still.

I guess 17 hours of music and you are bound to include some duds. You can't please everyone for 17 hours straight!
