Total Time = 3h 13m 33s
Overall Rank = 2659/3449
Age Group = Clydes 30-39
Age Group Rank = 74/97
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30. Ate a powerbar and headed over to Vinoy Park. Parked at a garage and took the shuttle to transition. I got set up and looked for other NAMC folks. Ran into Leslie and chatted with her until we headed over to the swim start with Neal and Bep. I forgot to bring my pre-race gu but figured that I ought to be alright. Getting my chip was a mess but I got to the beach 10 minutes before my wave started.
Event warmup:

Walking from transition to the swim start.
Swim
  • 31m 14s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was a little nervous about the swim. Actually, alot nervous. Due to a shoulder impingement problem I have not been able to train as much as I would have liked. I was a little relieved to see that I was not the only one without a wetsuit (there was one other guy in my wave without one). I started at the back of the pack with the intention of being slow and smooth. I should have sighted better but kept with the group pretty well. I concentrated on keeping my strokes long and smooth. I was very conservative but was still able to catch the stragglers in the group ahead of me. On the last 500 meters I started to push a little harder because I was confident of finishing and passed alot of people. At the finish my arms and shoulders still felt pretty fresh.
What would you do differently?:

I would start out near the front and would push harder. I really think I could have easily been under 30:00.
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

I took my time making sure that I had not forgotten anything. I rinsed my feet off and had a little trouble getting my socks on. I jogged into transition but walked with the bike until the mount.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions more. There is no excuse for such a long transition when I don't have to strip off a wetsuit.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 7s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed a couple of people right out of transition and maybe 10 more out on the course. I must have been passed by over 200 people. I was concerned about pushing too hard and not being able to run the whole 10k at the end. I lost a water bottle at mile 5 when I hit a bump. I didn't notice it at first and was far past when I realized what had happened. I also forgot to take the GU that I had taped to the frame. I was really disappointed in my bike leg, especially when I saw how much slower I was than the rest of the guys in my division.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Actually follow my hydration/nutrition plan.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

Not a bad transition. Took the time to turn around my sock that I had put on upside down. Took a GU and a long pull of water.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 10m 32s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a hard time getting my legs under me. It wasn't until mile 2 that I started to feel right. I tried to have some water and gatorade at every stop but definitely was not taking in enough. I should have brought another GU with me to take at the turnaround. It was neat to see the remaining NAMC crew running the other way once I was on the way back. The last half mile was very difficult but I got a nice adreneline rush from David, who was yelling his head off. I was paced by another guy in my division for most of the run but was able to turn it up a bit for the last 200 yards and beat him by 10 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Eat more, drink more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit feeling a little dizzy. Drank water and gatorade until my stomach rebelled.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, getting sick.

Event comments:

During the race, especially the run portion I felt really out of energy. Despite this I had a great time at the race. The venue was great, the people were great, and it was nice to have so many club members there for support.

Hmmm - I think you mean 3 hours, not 8, right??  Sounds like you did really well.  I'm happy to hear the swim went so well for you, and as soon as you get a new(er) bike you will be flying past people.  Great first race of the season!

Great job, Felix!  I know what you mean by being disappointed on the bike (feeling the same) but this is where we could learn from it and work our butts off!  It was so cool seeing you on the run course!
