Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:15am and got some food in me. Relaxed for a bit and packed the car to make the trip with Mom and little brother.
Event warmup:

Fixed up my transition and talked with my cousin who was in the Expert/open field.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1500 meters
  • / 100 meters
Comments:

Horrible swim, if anything could have gone wrong, everything did. Started out with the mid set of letting everyone go and not try and get caught up in all the BS with the mob. Let everyone go and ended up swimming two strokes and was ontop of everyone. Had a hard time getting into a rhythm at all. Goggles started to fill up with water and I was trying to site with a hard time at that too. Started to get off course and made the turn back around. Came back and was starting to feel sick. I would come up to catch my breathe and just felt like total crap. I ended up getting "sick" and didn't really have anything in me so it was more of a total dry heave.

Got to be around (370ish) meters left in the swim and just gave up. Didn't feel like killing myself and everything in my body was getting tired. I figured why try and kill myself. Ended up swimming over to the rescue boat and got picked up. Went into the EMT tent where they took my chip. Frustrated with myself I made the dissapointing walk back to my family (Aunt, Mom, Cousin, girlfriend, and Brother). To my surprise my friend also quit but a lot earlier.

While in the EMT tent the lady told me I could do the rest of the course just not get a time. So I said F'it and lets go out and have some fun. Ended up doing really well on the bike course for having a lot of my training in the flat lands.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more, get used to OWS. Definately freaked me out big time.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 1h 25m
  • 25.48 miles
  • 17.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went well for even the fact of me being "out" of the race. Just went out and tried to do my best, but still have fun and cheer everyone on.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe stick through the swim and do the whole thing.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 00m
  • 6.21 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Wow... ummm wow. Now I trained on the course I mean lake laps so I was used to the little hills, but not for the hills outside the course. Got frustrated as my legs were not up to par at all with the run. My Quads started seize up during the run and made it so walking wasn't comfortable.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with the family, got the stupid "finishers" medal (which I might just throw away) and went to breakfast/lunch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run mainly, swim I could have fought through more but at the time, I just gave up.

Event comments:

Very wonderful race, great volunteers along all parts of the course. I thank them very much.

Totally didn't know you were that close to the swim finish!  At that point it was probably a total mental game more than a physical one.  Sounds very similar to my Eagleman race last year.  By the time I rounded the boat at the halfway mark I was mentally done and had thrown in the towel.  Made the rest of the race miserable!

Hey, now you have the chance to redeem yourself and beat your demons!  This has just given you another focus and goal!

There is this little oly. race in Annapolis in September that might be right up your alley.  I'll be suffering in that one as well!

Don't sweat it!  You gave it a good shot and things didn't go as you had hoped.  Use this as fuel to rock at your next race.  Just think of the thousand and thousands of people out there that don't even make it to the starting line because they're too scared of the swim.  (I think they're called duathletes )  I'm willing to bet your next one will go well.  Stick with it and get some open water practice in.

Thanks guys for the comments.  Rick I might do the Annapolis Oly tri.  You think the water will be a little clearer?  I might just scrap that Oly tri, do a few sprints to stay in shape and concentrate on the Baltimore 1/2 Marathon for the end of October.  Then refocus and get down to the grind.  Now I know I wasn't in shape at ALL for that race, kinda bummer but makes me think I have 364 days of training until I attack that place again.

that's tough about the swim. i freaked out in my first OWS in april and had to sidestroke/backstroke most of the way. kudos for tackling the rest of the course, and you'll beat the lake next year. maybe try to find some sprints this summer that have an OWS---Little Pepper in VA in june has a 750 meter lake swim.
don't toss the medal---keep it as motivation for next time.

I agree don't toss the medal. Use it as motivation for next year. How many are interested in Annapolis? I've run the 10 mile course there and understand that the Tri run will be on part of that course. It's pretty hilly but I don't think it's anything like what Columbia just threw at us.

I would do annapolis tri but I just don't have the time to get ready for that again.  With Summer classes and my summer job.  I'm pretty much content with doing the B-more 1/2 mary and the sprint tri.

Don't worry about it!! Everyone gets a little freaked out and you will get better. You are a good swimmer, so you will get the hang of it sooner than others.

Thanks for the comments guys, I plan to take total revenge on that course next year!  I can't wait really, knowing how much better I'm going to do and how much better shape I'll be in.

Well ... there are already over 1,100 people signed up for it .... Surprised

The 10k portion of the race will basically do an out and back usingthe 10 miler course.  Having grown up in Annapolis I know every part of the listed course pretty well.

And CJ, it's Annapolis ...... the water will be murky as crap ......
