US Women's Triathlon Series
72F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 27m 14s
Overall Rank = 194/1885
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 41/419
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15. Did my usual pre-race mumbo-jumbo. Got in the car at 5, got to transition around 5:45. My wave's transition area was smack dab in the middle of things ... I could have slept another 30 minutes and it wouldn't have mattered.
Event warmup:

Not much. Mostly chit-chat. A little mental prep.
Swim
  • 13m 11s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I once again stayed off to the side and got into my own groove pretty quickly. I felt great during the swim and it seemed to go by really fast. Made use of the turning buoy technique I learned up in Baraboo! SCHWEET!
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

Alright, once again I have neglected to learn the rubberband trick. Duh! Note to self, ask a vet to show me!!! Ran with one shoe on the bike, the other in my hand. Jammed it on as soon as I got out of transition. Got the other one on during the ride.

BTW, anyone get a Garmin reading on the distance between the swim and T1?
What would you do differently?:

Pull my head out of my a$$ before the race.
Bike
  • 43m 16s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

I grew up out there and had friends who lived in those neighborhoods so it's sort of a trip through time for me. I would have enjoyed that more if I hadn't been yelling "Passing on your left" so frequently.
What would you do differently?:

Gotten vocal sooner. It took me a couple of miles to find my mean voice.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

I spazzed on my socks ... feet were still drippings with goo from the swim. (I never bother to dry my feet.)
What would you do differently?:

Do everything a little faster.
Run
  • 25m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I spent the first mile getting into the groove, tried to pick it up the second mile and then finally smoke the third mile. Started to get a little tight in the lungs around the more wooded areas but nothing that would cause an asthma attack. I pushed HARD on the bike and I was just a little pooped from that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood around a chit-chatted. I'm in a group of hens for god's sake, what else would you expect? I did manage to stretch my quads.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Some mental limitations with the wheezing but mostly I busted it on the bike and was a wee bit tired.

Event comments:

My biggest beef with this race is the size and waiting involved. BUT it's something that is to be expected and if you manage your expectations, it's fine. I was just really done with wearing wet pants and was dying to change and faced with a 30 minute wait to get my dry clothes. BTW, I changed on the scene. No porta potty for me. My patience was cooked. ;)

Great race Jessica. It is a crowded race and the swim is a little weird in that wading pool, but you did awesome. You were really fast on that bike and then came out with a really strong run. Oh, and both were preceeded by and really nice swim. You've just gotten really strong all the way around this year. I'm so impressed!!!

What a great race for you.  I don't know what the turning buoy technique is but it sounds like it worked well.  Better that you were the one yelling "on your left" than someone else yelling it as you went down memory lane.

Sounds like a good race - fast bike and run. hey at least the water was warm this time!

What the Barraboo bouy turn technique (makes it sound so mysterious)?

Great Job!

Buoy turning involves sort of a spin ... freestyle, flip to backstroke, flip to freestyle, etc. as many times as it takes to get around. Of course making sure that you "flip" the right way for your turn. It's hard to describe without visuals but hopefully this helps.

Great race -- you had some awesome splits!  And really fun meeting you!

Even WITH the visuals, the flippy buoy turn method is still a mystery to me...

Nice race.

Mean voice??

But in a nice way ... Asking politely didn't work so I had to haul out the more forceful version. I said thank you as I flew by though.

Mean voice = game face = GRRRR = smokin' fast times.  Nice work!

A place to stay (My folks live walking distance to this race), 2000 female triathletes, some of them changing out of trigear in the breeze...  Mmmm, maybe a volunteer opportunity....

I know there were at least two of us ... that's a long drive for very unglamorous burlesque.
