Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Novice 35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

I got up about 4:00 a.m. and ate a bagel with peanut butter and a banana with water and of course a Diet Coke with caffeine. My family was awoken at 4:30 am. Bless them for getting up so early to cheer Mom on. I arrived at site at 6:00 for a 7:30 start time. I had plenty of time to get ready, walk around, and check out where we would be entering and exiting each area.
Event warmup:

I really didn't warm up with bking, swimming, or running. Talked a lot with my brother and family.
Swim
  • 12m 1s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

I swam a little wide around the buoys but stayed right on course. I was able to catch up to the wave in front of me (younger novice women)
What would you do differently?:

I really wouldn't do anything differently. I felt strong. I ran as far as I felt I should before beginning my swimming. When finishing, I swam until my hands started to touch the sand. I had great rhytm going and felt good.
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

I thought I did okay in the T1. The wetsuit was a little hard to get off. It was a bit of a jog from the swim to the bike. I brought a gold star balloon to help mark my bike. It really did help as no one else had one.
What would you do differently?:

I had a bit of a struggle getting my feet into the cages on the bike. I guess I need to be a little bit faster.
Bike
  • 43m 41s
  • 13 miles
  • 17.86 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Didn't have to change shoes so that really helped. I'm used to running while chewing gum so I even remembered to grab that. The race number ripped as I was pulling on my belt. Tried tucking in the number but that was a bit of a pain.
What would you do differently?:

Be moree careful not to rip the race number
Run
  • 22m 46s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

The run felt very long. I kept wondering where the turn around was. I always think this is my strongest area out of all three, but it was the hardest.
What would you do differently?:

Didn't take in any water while running at any of the station but it went fine. I pushed myself pretty hard but didn't realize how quickly I was really going until I finished. The running part seemed to be the hardest out of all 3.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water and then it felt good once I cooled down to have an ice cold pop.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My bike-need a road or tri bike for next season.

Event comments:

It was great to have my entire family, my parents, and my brother's family there to cheer us on. It made it fun coming into the transition area each time. Thanks everyone!

Course: I thought this was much easier than it was going to be. I had planned to start on the outside but choose to start on the inside. I guess I was feeling confident. I was in the very last wave out of 10. I wasn't excited about starting last but decided that it wasn't too bad. This way anyone that I passed up, I was beating since 100% of the people started before me or at least, with me.

Great race Becki!  I can't believe you managed that awesome ride on a hybrid.  You'll be great when you can upgrade to a road or tri bike.  You passed me on the swim, I am sure.  Hopefully I didn't get in your way   Really fantastic run, I had the same thoughts about the turnaround.  You just got there a lot quicker than I did!

O.K., how did I miss this one?  Congrats on the novice win.  You had a great race and you'll have an even stronger race next year.  You've got some fast run times, whoowhee!

I guess your brother had a great race as well.  You both are naturals.

Great meeting you both at Calhoun and meeting your family at Minneman...
