You go when you have to, where you have to. Some perfect it so that they don't have to stop riding or running, just taking care of business on the fly. Others pull over into the bushes, some wait until transition/finish or the rare on-course portapotty.

Bear has it right.  You can't schedule your breaks in an event like that, so you have to deal with it as they come up.  Some are okay with peeing on themselves, some are not.  First, decide which type of person you are.  That makes the decision of where to go a little bit easier.  Oh, and if you are the first type, just make sure you have some water around to rinse your legs off.

Ha! As someone with, let's just say, a VERY active bladder, this ended up being an issue for me in my first sprint! Should've just stopped at that porta-potty at T2 because peeing on myself or stopping in the bushes just seemed ridiculous with such a short distance.

Anywhere and everywhere! You can't control it, it just hits you sometimes. I've gone everywhere...on my bike, in bushes, porta potties. This is why I carry my phone during some races; so i can call bear and ask him if it's ok......My experience is that on the HIM and IM distance the bike and bushes are much better than stinky sweat/sh*t filled porta potties. Or on a school building during a 10k.

In Oly's and longer I pee on my bike. I actually bring a water bottle like 1/3 full to wash off afterwards. As a women peeing in the bushes isn't as easy for men and often the routes have you going by people's houses so dropping my tri shorts there isn't happening. Seems odd but for me it is more modest to pee on my bike...maybe gross but pee is sterile.

I always ask where and if there are porta potties just so I know but my bladder and port a potties are not always on the same timing.

I even have learned to pee while I run strange but true. It isn't that I'm in such a hurry or racing to podium but more there isn't any place modest to go. On training rides I know all the spots I can stop in the bushes and do that.

May sounds super weird but for most of us we need to practice peeing on the bike so a few times a year I drink a lot before my workout and practice. If you struggle my suggestion is to squirt your crotch with water and seems much easier to go.

Great thread! I've had the same question. Living in AZ, I tend to overhydrate just to be save and then have to go at least once every hour on long bike rides. Haven't raced in anything but a sprint yet and was fine (didn't have to go) but this is/was one of my main concern about going up to an Oly distance race.

It poured on my bike ride yesterday and my shorts were drenched from the rain. Should have taken the opportunity to practice!

Obviously you should go when you have to go! The options have been provided in previous posts!

I have used all of the options....HOWEVER, be careful if it is a USAT officiated race and the USAT judge is holding to the letter of the regulations......Just did Vineman 70.3 and they were extremely strict about potty breaks.....porta potties only......if caught it was a yellow card, red card or immediate DQ. The area that we were racing had a high concentration of environmentalists. The officiating crew numbered 10 official judges. I'm sure that there were racers that used other options than the porta-potties, they were just careful not being caught. Just be aware of how strict or not so strict the officiating will be on your race.

Now lets talk sensibility.....if you are a top contender overall or in your age group classification, then do what you need to do safely to win. If you are a mid-packer or just trying to finish, go ahead and stop at the porta-potties. It is not going to make that much of a difference.

SweetK wrote: "How often do you take a potty break during your long distance events? Obviously the swim is a no-brainer But what about the bike and run?"

Once before the swim, once on the bike course (porta potty) during a HIM; and at the end of the race.

Hope this made sense, bottomline....be safe and have fun!

I think going on yourself is just stupid unless you have a podium spot depending on it. But I guess on the bike or run it's your decision and doesn't affect anyone else (except drafters)...

HOWEVER, if you pee in the swim it does affect other people. I get really sick of swimming through urine at races (and don't give me the "I overhydrated" argument...if I can smell it it's not dilute enough to be a hydration issue). I don't care how intense of a racer you think you are. Be responsible and hold your bladder for the shortest leg of the race.

Everyone has answered the how question.  Personally, at my last HIM, I went once before the swim and 3 times on the bike.

In regards to the USAT officials, the only rule is against public nudity.  That means that you can only get dinged if you pull over, whip it out (guys) or drop your shorts (both).  Peeing on yourself is NOT against USAT or any rules that I know of.

But like one person has said, if you're going to pee before the swim and in the water.  At least walk away from the group to do it.  Don't just stand there wading waiting for the start.  Just common courtesy.

I tried to pee en route in Lake Placid but it just wasn't happening so I stopped in T1/T2 and once on the bike leg. Actually by the middle of lap two it felt really good to get off the bike for a few minutes and when I got back on I was much more comfortable.

I've never done this but I have a friend who sits down on the grass in T2 and while she is putting on her running shoes just pees in the grass.

The notion that you should only do certain things (pee on the bike, wear an aerohelmet, use nice race wheels, etc.) if you're competing for a podium spot is ridiculous IMO.  People race for their own reasons and getting faster is a priority for just about everybody.  You do what you're comfortable with and ignore people who try to tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing.

My HIM allegedly had a port-o-potty on the bike route, but I didn't see it.  I wasn't about to get off my bike and run 20 feet into the woods either.  So should I have held it the whole time because I am merely an MOP'er?  I don't think so.  At any rate, I was super hydrated and it was a good distraction from the long ride.  No one saw me either.
Two suggestions, though:  1) wait until after the bottle exchange so you have something to rinse with.  2) keep your feet even - meaning, don't have one leg extended at the bottom of your pedal stroke.  Trust me.

#1 on the bike and run. It's not worth the hassle of stopping. Not sure how many times I have to go during the longer races (my first HIM is in a few weeks), but considering I usually go twice on my long ride, I'd imagine it'll happen once or twice.

Pee away! I do anytime I need to. If you do it on the fly no worries, some water to clean it up and you are good to go , but if you choose to stop, please make sure you are NOT doing your business on someone’s backyard or front lawn. We race through communities most of the time so let's show them common courtesy. (same as with littering, etc)

I went so far as to practice peeing on the bike just to make sure I could do it. It wasn't a problem, except a little messy. But curiously enough, I have never had to pee during a race on the bike or run, including IMAZ! I was very suprised by that. I did go about 30 min after finishing the race and everything looked fine, so it will just depend on how you respond tro your hydration on the day. Be flexible.

HAHAHA! Me too, although I must be even stupider because I ASPIRE to pee during my training rides! One of my proudest accomplishments this season was peeing all over Richter Pass!

Ditto.  That was my bonus race goal for my HIM this summer ramping up to MOO.  No go, but have since taken care of that one.

This is both funny and serious. Good thread...and something non-endurance athletes really talk about.

I overhydrated...really overhydrated before a HIM earlier this month. On top of that, I drank too much coffee the night before...I was bored and anxious!...the high humidity didn't help either...

But on the swim, on lap 2, I swam a bit to the side away from the group and started breast stroking - I guess it's a "can't do two things at once" with the crawl...and relaxed enough to get it started...just then an official in a boat paddled up to me and asked if I needed assistance.

It was good of him to ask, and maybe I shouldn't have said, "no thanks, I've been doing this all my life..." I did say thanks anyway though.

For what's its worth, there were no strippers at that race, so no one had to deal with my bladder issues or bad hydration planning!

For the record, I had to pee four times while on the bike and yes, I stopped every time, but never got off the bike...I used to ride a steel bike...pee and steel don't mix...I've never gotten out of that habit. But that's about 4 minutes wasted (counting slowing down, relaxing and speeding up again) But think about all the stress I saved myself thinking about it, had I not got rid of it!

Oh and by the way....we are talking outdoor events right!!!!

Not pool, track or stationary bikes...'cuz that is just disturbing!

I got about a year's worth of flack from a bunch of BTers for running in to use the bathroom at a Starbuck's during the last bike lap of an urban Oly.

Hey, it's not like I ordered a latte or anything!

Ha! You're funny, Jorge!

Oh, it gets even better. After pee'ing on Richter, I left my shoes in my car (in 100F weather) for a day afterwards. Were it not for a dear BT member reading my log, reminding me to rinse them out, they'd have sat in there for DAYS!!!  I cannot describe the horrid odour that blasted from my car when I opened it... its for sale now, anyone interested?
