I've been swimming with my goggles on first and then the cap on top. I was told it will help keep them on dury a hit to the head.

Which is best ?

In races, which is about the only time I wear a swimcap (ok, OWSs too), I put the goggles on first and then the cap so when I come out of the water, I pull off the goggles and the swim cap comes with it.  I'm not working it twice.

Peace.

In my opinion you would want to put the cap on first and the goggles second. If you get kicked in the face or just have a leak in your goggles you can flip to your back while swimming, or tread water and fix the problem, put the goggles back on and keep swimming. If you have to take your cap off to fix your goggles that could be an adventure trying to get both back on while treading water.

Personal preference but I feel pretty strongly about having my goggles on first, then cap. If you're in the ocean (or even a large lake) diving under even a moderate wave can sweep the goggles off your head. Not so if they're under your cap. Second, in the flailing arms and legs of a tri start (and around the buoy, or even en route if it's an out-and-back and there's no rope separating the outbound and inbound swimmers), similarly, your goggles can get knocked clear off your head. Good luck trying to find them and put them back on in the mass of flailing bodies and churning water. But if they're under your cap ... it's very difficult for them to move much more than a few inches up or down beyond your eyes.

Whatever the question is for--happy paddling!

As opposed to the other way, where pulling off the swim cap causes the goggles come off with it.

Personal preference, IMHO. I've never been able to get comfortable with the goggles underneath the swim cap.

I put the cap ove the goggles for that reason AND so that when I take the goggles off at the end of the swim, it peels the cap off with them.

I usually make sure my swim trunks are on first, but hey, I'm not judging any of you.

BWA-haha.

Goggles on first, swimcap over that. The urban legend I've heard is that this makes it difficult or impossible for people to pull your goggles off (accidentally or otherwise) during the swim.

If the goggles are under the cap, it is very hard to adjust their positioning because 90% of the laces are fixed to your head.

when they are above the cap, you can shift the entire lace so that they reposition over your eye sockets.

It seems like it is about 50/50 whenever someone asks this question. I just prefer (along with briderdt and the others) goggles first.

I'm not the most coordinated with trying to get my cap off and sometimes I would scratch my own face tring to get my fingers/nails under the cap. With the goggles under - just pull them off and the cap goes too. I have never been kicked in the head, but it stands to reason that the cap would keep them on enough so they don't sink to the bottom even if they are not over your eyes.

With regards to making adjustments to goggles - I just make EXTRA sure they are on correctly before I put on the cap.

I was always a cap first then goggles person as I felt it was more comfortable from a positioning standpoint.  That was until Mooseman this year when in a moment of foreshadowing MarlboroughMan suggested I put the goggles on first under my cap so that nobody would take them off with a blow to the head.  I never had issues before in any of my races but of course in Mooseman I took a couple of good shots to the head dislodging my goggles (fortunately I took his advice).  Convinced they would've been off had they been over the cap instead of underneath.  Likewise at Lake Placid in the mess along the cable I took quite a few hands to the head that certainly would've pulled goggles off had they not been under the cap.  At one point I thought I might actually lose my cap let alone the goggles.

silicone cap--goggles--latex race cap

Works great if you have longer hair which easily gets ripped if you only wear a latex cap or have the goggle straps right on the hair under any cap. The silicone cap is smooth and easy on the hair in T1. Plus the goggles are easier to put on and keep in position with a silicone cap under them.

I had heard from someone to do goggles under the cap for my race so I tried that.  (I don't wear a swim cap for training so the race was my only experience with one).  I had some major fog issues and I had to stop and fix them, but I was able to do it w/out a problem and w/out having to take off the cap.

Normally, I put the swim cap on first, then the goggles.  At IMLP, when I knew I'd finish in the top half on the swim and would finish be in the middle of a big pack of people, goggles first, then swim cap, as I didn't want to lose the goggles.  Wearing goggles over the swim cap is a bad idea at an Ironman mass swim start with 2000+ swimmers.  But practice it a bit before.

I'm fairly new to this, but started with cap first, then goggles, so I could adjust the goggles more easily. I saw some of the elite women at my first ocean swim triathlon with their goggles under their caps and thought it was strange. Then after losing three pair in about a month while body surfing into shore after an ocean swim, I am a complete convert to goggles first. It made me nervous at first to feel that I couldn't adjust them easily, but now I've got them dialed in and I haven't lost a pair since!

I have a really hard time getting my goggles on with a good seal and not leaking and the swim cap is just another thing that seems to get in the way. So I do not put the cap under the goggles for that reason.

Yeah, but I have such an oversized melon, that I can barely grab any bit of my swimcap... I need the goggles to do the work for me.

Peace,
Brian

I've got big, curly hair that pushes any and all swim caps off, including the pretty ones with flowers that I borrow from my mum. Putting the goggles on after cap helps keep the cap on my head.

Hell no I'm not cutting my hair. I'm committed to the sport, I don't want to be committed.

Goggles over.  In all my swims, and I get into the scrum, including last Sunday's 900 person mass starts, never lost a set of goggles, anywhere, not going out, through surf, bodysurfing, etc.

My secret: I have "pool" adjustments for goggles - nice and loose.  And "OWS" adjustments for goggles, a bit (not a lot tighter).  If you tighten them enough, I think I'd be knocked out before they came off, even diving through surf.

Answer is:  whatever works.
