Expert 830 Chesapeake, VA | Subject: Current Ohio river temps Well, I will bring my wetsuit, but with temps like this we won't be able to use them. I just saw this on the other Tri forum:
Air temperature - 80 F. Water temperature from 18" to 8' depth- 84.6 F.

New user 7 | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps My recommendation is to bring the wet suit. It is raining up river in Ohio. I did the Great Buckeye race up there last weekend and they were wetsuit legal. It is also raining in the Ville today. Even though this is not an IM NA race in the past IM NA has done everything they can to make their races wetsuit legal. 2 miles is a long way for folks who are not used to racing that far in open water. The race org would rather not have to fish anyone out. |

Veteran 130 Golden, CO | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps We got 1.5" of rain today and the local weather guys are calling for Thunderstorms on Saturday night. So there's a possibility of the river cooling off some. I swam the river on Sunday morning and it was like bath water.... |

Expert 830 Chesapeake, VA | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps Bath water or not, I don't think that is normal anyway. I heard that Louisville that there is a record 22 days with temps over the 90's. Hence the warm water. I think it should be hovering around 75-78 |

Veteran 130 Golden, CO | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps Many of those days were over 100... like today! I did not wear a wetsuit. We're expecting rain on Friday/ Saturday so it may cool the water down somewhat. Doubtful it will get down to 78 though. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps "Based on historical river flow data, we were hopeful that our original swim course design could be utilized. After further consultation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we determined our alternative swim course is best suited for Sunday's river conditions. A time-trial swim start will offer athletes a unique beginning to their Ironman experience in Louisville," says Steve Meckfessel, Event Director. Details relating to the new Ford Ironman Louisville swim course are as follows:
The inaugural event will lead more than 2,100 athletes on a journey through Louisville and surrounding communities to include the city of LaGrange, Oldham and Henry Counties. There will be 50 slots to this year's Ford Ironman World Championship taking place on October 13, 2007 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Additionally, professional athletes will compete for a $50,000 prize purse. The event will be televised on Versus (VS.) later this year. To download maps for the swim, bike, or run course, and/or for road impact information, please see the "Quick Links" section of the http://www.ironmanlouisville.com website. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps You've got to be kidding me ........ a TT start to an Ironman???? Even starting on 3 second intervals by the time the 2100th person goes off it will be at least an hour and a half later ......... and they are going to make people swim with the current and not against it? Jeez ....... the pros are going to be out of the water in the low 40's probably. Sucks not to be able to use a wetsuit. That is going to force a lot of mediocre and weak swimmers to freak out ...... (And to reiterate previous threads on the topic, if it is allowed, you are a fool not to use one, even at the elite level unless you are a sub 1:00/100 m or so swimmer). |

Ok, if you ask me... it keep getting better and better! We could only HOPE for something like this in 2008. But I agree, if you get off to a late start... that takes racing time away from you. For someone like me looking a 16 hour IM... I can't afford to lose a lot of time on my swim start. I have to say though, the idea of not being in a mass start, swimming WITH the current, and not wearing a wetsuit... sounds like a heavenly race! |

Well they will still probably cut the time off at 17 hours. How much of a cluster would it be trying to determine if the person coming across the line after hour 17 if they were legit or not? I can see it now, time 17:30- "John Smith... uuummm... you are an Ironman!" "Mary Jones... hhhuuummm... you are NOT an Ironman. Sorry about that." |

In my opinion (as a qualified weak swimmer), part of the true IM experience is surviving the mass swim start. And this doesn't even consider what this does to the field for the rest of the day. As stated above, calculators will be required to determine if someone makes the cut-off times. Oh well, good luck to all of our BT athletes. Enjoy the experience! Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps Sucks for people who are honest and self seed at the back and then cut it really, really close to midnight or don't make it at all, but only by a few minutes. If I started at 7:30 and made it across the line at 12:05, I'd be pretty upset with the official "DNF." |

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps This sounds like a bunch of crap. WTF?? This is suppose to be an ironman and half the battle (well maybe not half) is surviving the swim start. Shouldn't the contigency plan included a mass start? I say ditch KY and move to TX next year (ha ha). Seriously though, this suck for some but others will definately like it. |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps JeepFleeb - 2007-08-23 12:43 PM Andrew and I swam for 30 minutes in the river today. Temps are definitely too warm for wetsuits. There's not even a question. The currents are definitely strong. We swam out for 15 minutes, turned around, and got back in 4.
This just blows me away! The current must be really fast. I'm curious though, if you swam for 30 minutes and swam out for 15 and back in 4...where did the other 11 minutes go?

Extreme Veteran 484 McHenry, IL | Subject: RE: Current Ohio river temps Do you think the current is fast enough that slow swimmers (those who already expecting to be pushing the swim cutoff) might truly not be able to make forward progress against it? Take a "2 hour IM swimmer" for example. They're swimming 1.2 mph with no current. If the current is faster than that, these people are going backwards in the upstream section. I suppose that's precisely why they moved the swim start to a spot where the currents are a little weaker, as you said. -Steve |

The new swim course will encompass the traditional 2.4 miles. As a result of the increased river flow downstream, slightly faster swim times can be expected. But if everyone swims WITH the current... then the swim times will be fast! Edited by KSH 2007-08-23 3:21 PM |
