Subject: New Setup Race

There have been rumors.  This seems as close to official as we'll get until Oct 1, I guess:

Slowtwitch thread

The first article in the thread.  I hope Setup doesn't get angry for me posting it here, but hey, it's already on slowtwitch so hardly a secret now.

The rumors are true. We will announce the event officially on or about Oct. 1st. This is the date that the first national ads will run in some of the national tri pubs, and also the date that the event website will be activated.

The inaugural "Beach2Battleship" will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2008 in Wilmington, NC. Registration for the event will begin on January 2nd. We will offer a "full" and a "half". The race will start at Wrightsville Beach (one of Wilmington's beach suburbs) and finish at the USS North Carolina (battleship memorial).

We're very realistic with our goals for this event. We're painfully aware of the current climate with iron distance racing. WTC and NA Sports do a great job with "Ironmans". We can't compete with them and aren't foolish enough to think that we'll have those kinds of numbers. We do feel, however, that we can compete with any other non-Ironman branded race anywhere, and that's our goal; to be the best of the rest.

We have a lot of things going for us;

1) We (Setup Events) have a tremendous amount of experience in the sport, and enjoy a solid reputation.

2) We have experience in producing an iron distance race. We produced the Duke Blue Devil for four years (2001-2005). We learned a lot.

3) We have a perfect venue to stage the race. Wilmington is a tourist destination. It sits on the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern North Carolina, and has some of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast. Being a top tourist destination, Wilmington has an airport, and lots of hotels and restaurants. So the infrastructure is in place for an event of this size.

4) We have the complete support of local government and civic groups. We presented the idea a coupe of months ago at one meeting that included; the Mayor of Wilmington, the Chairman of New Hanover County Commission, Mayor of Wrightsville Beach, Executive Director of the Chamber, Executive Director of the Visitors & Convention Bureau, head of the Parks & Recreation Dept. This group unanimously and enthusiastically supports the event. This level of support is priceless.

5) The weather in Wilmington in Oct. /Nov. is absolutely perfect for an iron distance race. The daytime highs are usually in the 70s - lows in the 50s/60s. It's our driest period of the year, so skis are usually brilliantly sunny. Even though we sit on the ocean, the swim will not be an ocean swim. The swim will take place in salt water, but in a network of channels that comprise part of the intracoastal waterway. Water temperature at that time of the year is usually still around 70 degrees.

All in all, we're very excited about this challenge. We've formed an event committee of about 25 folks and already well into our planning.

Thanks for your interest in the event. We pledge to deliver a memorable and "first-class" experience.

Bill S.

I hadn't planned on doing a 1/2 so soon, that will be the end of my second season, but I don't think I can resist. My 1st Oly was going to be Pinehurst '08, guess I'll need to move that up a bit.

So the rumors are true! Yay! I'm definitely in for the Half. MAY consider the Full but I will wait to make that decision later. This will be a great venue for an IM race since it won't be too far for friends and family to come cheer me on!

Wade, if you're in for the full, I'll go for the full.  I may have to drop a few races off the radar to be able to do this, but that would be a fun race.

I reserve the right not to make my decision about a full until after I do a half, but it is sounding pretty tempting.

So do you get ink for an iron distance that is not an actual ironman race? Its all about the ink.

Yes you get ink but no you don't get the m-dot. The more I looked into getting the ink the more I realized I don't want to get the m-dot. Everybody has one so it looses some of the meaning. I've decided what ink I will be getting after my IM in Oct and that will be revealed at that time.

This race is being mentioned all over the place these days. I think it will be a great one. Guess we all need to practice swimming in the ocean huh?

So do you believe one must do Kona, or just a IM branded race to get the M-dot?

I imagine the swim will be like the Wilmington Tri and be in the waterway between the ocean and the Intercoastal Waterway. It is salt water but there are no waves. It is very calm especially earlier morning only the current to worry about.

It's a pretty good distance from the beach to in town where the battleship is. I guess they would have to put some type of shuttle system in place to get back to beach(transistion area??) I wonder how this will work for athletes and spectators.

I was planning on signing up for IMFL next year. Looks like I will have a choice a lot closer to home now.

You get the ink if you want the ink.  there are many threads that debate this, but the only answer is what you want to get.  I think I have more desire to cover 140.6 than to get a tattoo.  But I will get one of those fance window stickers that says "140.6"

I was thinking that the bike course would be a loop and the run would be point to point.

As far as getting back to the beach to get your stuff, whats another 20 or so mile jog after doing an iron distance race.

Over the Mtn is a setup race which uses a point to point format.  The swim start, swim finish/T1, and the T2/finish line are all in different spots.  They do a good job with shuttles from the finish line to the swim start, as well as transporting your bagged items from T1 to the finish line for collection. I'm guessing that's what they'd do for this event.

i had decided around april this year to do an IM in 08. i had decidedon IMFL until i realized that beach 2 battleship was going to happen.

the logistics of only being a 2 hr drive away and having a friend who has a house on wrightsville make it so much more worth it to stay local.

so chalk me up for another IMFL candidate who is voting to keep it local. i figure the more we patronize the local folks the stronger the scene in NC and the more races we will get.

setup does a great job so im hoping they wont let us down.

my only fear is to NOT register for IMFL in the 15 minute online window and then find out for some reason that they decide not to do beach 2 battleship. that would REALLY suck.

To remind everyone this is not the first Setup event which is an iron distance event. Two years ago there was Duke Iron distance race which was stopped due to lack of demand.
I totally agree that Setup is doing a great job with the races up to Half Iron distance but Iron distance races are a different breed. The logistics are a nigtmare and they are very hard to put together. There is a reason alll of the M-dot races in North America sells out every year because they have been doing it for so long and everything associated with them are perfected.
Yes they are expensive and very commercialized but if all you ever going to do is just one Ironman event I would strongly suggest to do an M-dot race.
That is what I am thinking of doing.
