Extreme Veteran 348 Cary, NC | Subject: Duke Liver Center Half Someone has to do this. What say you, you crazy half ironmen to be? I am a little intimidated still, but it isn't about finishing. It is part the difficulty with the course, part the fear that there won't be ebough water in the lake to swim and they will make us run instead of swim and partially because I wasn't faithful enough with my training to have a chance at meeting my initial time goals.
My new goal is to swim, bike and run strong, and to have a good time. Edited by kapinto 2007-09-02 4:44 PM |

Veteran 293 | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half I worry more about things I can't control at this point. Things like extreme heat, rain or a mechanical on the bike. There isn't much I would do different on the training so I'm as ready as can be for a first HIM. The experience will probably teach me something that should be done differently for the next one. |

Veteran 290 Kinston, NC | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half The course is tough, but doable. I am worried about the swim. Having seen the lake levels last weekend, it may be a slog, as opposed to a swim. Having ridden with Wade, he is good to go on the bike. With my workouts this weekend, give me hills and 55 degrees, and I will be a happy man. I think the heat just zaps me. Given the current weather trends, I think heat is on tap. |

If you've ridden it lately (like in the past week), you may have noticed some repair work going on at the RR crossing at Lower River Road/Lower Moncure Road. Fear not. Veteran 293 | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half Can't believe it but here is the information from setup: 9/14/2007: Duke Half Water Temperature The water temperature at Jordan Lake is 79 degrees (measured at 2PM on Friday). The race could easily be wetsuit legal. |

Extreme Veteran 348 Cary, NC | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half With the rain and the cool night expected tonight, I would say wetsuits are almose a sure thing. Who would have thunk that we would end up with cool water and cool air when it was so hot just a half week ago? |

Member 52 Cary, NC | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half 265 here... the vibe at packet pickup was a whole hell of a lot different than the early season sprint races people talking about doing 1:20 on the run if they have a good day, bikes that cost more than my car, etc. not a hairy leg to be seen. heading out for the pre-race in a bit. |

Member 52 Cary, NC | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half Water was 81 degrees tonite. So its still very questionable if its going to be WS legal. I did a quick swim tonite before the meeting. I found I had to REALLY turn way back to get a clear breath due to the wind chop. Hopefully it won't be windy tomorrow morning. |

Champion 23360 Taser-World | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half I went to watch. This was the first Tri I ever saw in person. Yeah, I'm a newbie. I got there after the swim, but watched the bike and run. I was really impressed by a) the speed of everyone, b) the expensive bikes, c) the absolute lack of body fat on all the competitors. Congratulations, everyone! Considering the distances, I expected to see more pained expressions on people's faces, but everyone just flew by, looking completely comfortable. It was a really cool experience to watch. I learned a lot, just by hanging out near the transition area, wandering around and talking to people, etc. (I really wanted to watch the swim, but I ended up sleeping in. Oops. LOL) GREAT JOB, EVERYONE! Dee |

Champion 23360 Taser-World | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half homewiz - 2007-09-16 9:53 PM my next and only question.... when is your first race??? Sometime after I get a bike, and learn how to run without destroying my knees. I'm doing the September Bike/Swim Challenge (on the Challenge Forum), and I'm increasing my swimming distance nicely. However, I've been using a stationary bike. (If I watch tapes of the TdF, it makes me pedal faster. LOL) I have an old mountain bike that I need to take in for an overhaul. (It's been in storage for about 15 years!) And I've never ridden on the road. So that's my next step. (Which is a bit scary 'cause I see lots of cars getting too close to riders.) As for running, my knees hate it. I've printed out the Couch to 5K Training Plan, and will probably start it after the Sept Bike/Swim Challenge. (Gotta support my team. Go East!) Worst case, when I start racing, I may have to fast-walk a section of the run. (Since my running isn't much faster than my fast-walking, I figure that's not a major issue!) So, as a long answer to your short question -- I want to start with a Sprint distance. (I found the setupevents.com website and saw them listed there.) But I'm thinking that the Sprints are done for the season now. So my first race may not be until next year. I think I'll be ok with the swim. The bike will be more of a challenge. And the run will be my biggest challenge. (I wish they had a reverse order event!) And, of course, I still have a lot to learn. As I said, I'm an absolute newbie. (And, for a first and only question - I sure gave you a long, convoluted answer! LOL) Dee |

Clearly you did not run hard enough then! That course should have you doing a standing 8 count at the finish! homewiz: Sub 5:30 is no joke on that course. Good job! |

Expert 671 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: Duke Liver Center Half Yes, it was a challenging course! The first half of the swim was choppy and the wind on the bike was crazy at times. The weather was perfect for the run though. I PRed at 5:22 and had a great time! Tony |
